Our trip to the 2003 MN State Fair

Travis, Claire, me, Amy, Daniela, and Georgi after seeing Charlie Daniels Band at the 2003 State Fair.

Friday night, as I mentioned, Lauren and I went to the Great Minnesota Get-Together.  For those of you South Dakotans who have only experienced the South Dakota State Fair, it’s much, much different.  At least ten times bigger with way more attractions.  Unless you love looking at farm equipment, the SD State Fair is a snooze fest.  This is the fifth time I’ve been to the MN State Fair.  In 2003, I went with a mismatched crowd from Valleyfair and had an amazing time.  It was my first post-21 experience and Travis bought me over $100 in overpriced beer to celebrate.

We went to a free Charlie Daniels Band concert rather intoxicated.  Charlie went to slow things down with a hymnal, and Travis and I hooted and hollered over the hushed crowd.  Some man in front of us turned around and asked “You guys want me to punch you in the face now or after the show?”  I replied, “Well, after the show I guess.  That would hurt to sit here with a punched face.”

In 2005, I took a day off at Valleyfair to take… ugh… Igor and Amanda to the fair.  Worst.  Day.  Ever.  Those two bitched and complained about everything all day.  Igor complained about it being too hot and too expensive (which it was), and Amanda complained about Igor having to be there with us.  Note that I haven’t spoken to either of them in two years.

Liz is amazed by the rodeo!

Liz is amazed by the rodeo!

In 2006, Liz asked me to go to the fair with her so we could see her high school friend in the rodeo.  I’ve never seen anyone so excited!  Liz flipped out when the big old bull hopped through a ring of fire.  Watching her react was far more entertaining than the rodeo itself.  Here she is long after the rodeo had ended, still trying to get a closer look at the horses.

Last year, I went back to the fair on a date with a girl named Jamie.  Things were going so-so until we ran across a booth that was airing the Twins game and I saw Scott Baker had a perfect game going to the ninth.  When the Royals broke up his bid for history with a walk and single, my night was ruined. Absolutely ruined.  Jamie wanted to continue going on rides and stuff, but I couldn’t manage.

That night, while watching the game for all of ten minutes, I saw Lauren for the first time and didn’t even know it!  Lauren had been at that game and was shown on TV applauding Baker after his perfect game was broken up.  We discovered this a few months ago when Fox Sports replayed that game.  I never saw Jamie again and three short months later, I finally met that cutie from TV!

And so in 2008, it seems only fitting that Lauren and I take in a night at the State Fair, which we did on Friday.  Lauren went earlier in the day to meet up with Jaime Berglund-Huseby, who works at the DFL booth.  I went to the fair directly after work, managing my way on the metro bus system.  On my ride there, I was sitting next to a group of underage hippie kids who were clearly drunk.  One larger fellow sat next to me and rubbed my back.  “You my boy!” he shouted, gin flowing from his breath.  He grabbed and shook me a little.  “This guy’s good shit!  You da man!”  I couldn’t help but think that this was Jason’s long-lost half-brother or something.  He was with lots of girls.  “Jolly, stop touching that man,” they said.  Apparently his name is Jolly because he starts drinking and has a fun time touching people.

Riding in one of those gondola-type things

Riding in one of those gondola-type things

At the fair, Lauren had her cheese curds and I tried a footlong walleye sandwich.  We walked through a few booths, checked out some of the exhibits, and finished the night with a terrifying ride on the slow-moving gondolas that take you 20 feet off the ground, from one side of the fair to the other.  I just couldn’t stop talking to Lauren about how I couldn’t believe those little cars could support us!  And how painful it would be if our car snapped off the cable and we landed on people below, shattering our necks.

On the way home, the bus dropped us off downtown.  Rather than waiting for a connecting bus, I declared it a good idea to walk home two miles.  Downtown Minneapolis was well-protected with a barrage of cops here for the Republican National Convention, but the further we got out of downtown and closer we got to that gray area between downtown and uptown, the uglier it got.  We hurried down the sidewalk to avoid a gang fight that was quickly escalating, only to come across what appeared to be a dead woman on the sidewalk.  She certainly wasn’t breathing or moving… I thought about calling the cops, but there were other people in the area and I figured someone had already done so.  I hope so!

Well, we made it home safely anyway, and with lots of exercise.

Now South Dakota State Fair memories, there’s a whole different article.  Back in the day it was “Can we go to the fair?  Can we go to the fair?”  “No!”  The fair was in Huron, which for us was the closest anything even remotely exciting came.  We wound up going about every year.  I once tripped Gov. Bill Janklow on the Midway.  Later in high school, I worked at the fair campgrounds for two summers with Bob Syring.  I could go into more detail about how Brandon befriended a bunch of criminals, but that really is another entire post in itself.

There’s not a lot new about me to write about today. Same old stuff the last couple nights—go to work, get home, watch Scrubs, eat dinner, watch the Twins lose to a terrible team, go to bed. The three-day weekend is upon us, and I have very few plans. Tonight after work I’ll try to get to the State Fair by myself on the bus systems of Minneapolis. Lauren is heading there this afternoon to meet her friend Jaime. Tomorrow we’re going to the Rosok housewarming BBQ, and after that, I have no Sunday or Monday plans. That’s a welcome feeling. My plans to head out on some sort of Labor Day weekend trip fell through, so we’ll chill in the Cities.

Here are a few totally random, unrelated bits of information I thought I’d share.

  • Thank you to Alex and Ann for the Twins tickets for my birthday present! Not only did they get me a couple third row seats for the big end-of-the-year White Sox series, but they each included amusing hand-written notes. Ann will be pissed if there’s not big news regarding me and Lauren when she sees us at Carpenter Bash in a month!
  • Thank you to the Krogmans, who sent me a belated birthday gift in the mail as well! As I write this, I haven’t even seen what it is yet, but when Lauren wrote me an e-mail this morning informing me that a package came, I told her to open it for me and describe its contents since I wanted to “e-open” a present for the first time ever. I’ve been informed it’s a board game and some original Emmy artwork!
  • Goodbye to Chris Walsh, who will leave the Twin Cities this weekend for a better life an hour south of the Twin Cities in the Fairbault area. We’ll miss being able to hang out with Walsh on a regular basis, but it will be far more convenient for him to get to work, and he reports he’ll be back up on the weekends.
  • Roommate Sarah finally got a car! After years of relying on public transportation, she’s out on the road on her own. Not only did she get a car, but she now has the newest car of any of the roommates. I believe Lauren’s Probe is a late-90s model, while Nick and I have ‘01 cars, I think. Sarah beats us all with an ‘04 Ford Focus.
  • I’ve been informed that I’m back on schedule to DJ next Saturday in Maple Plain, which is a far northwest suburb, up north of Lake Minnetonka. The bride requested “lots of country,” so I’m clearly the guy for the job.
  • I made the observation—just observation, not any implications!—that in the nine months (tomorrow, precisely) since I’ve known Lauren, I can count on my fingers the number of times she’s had to wake up before me. Even when she was employed, she didn’t have to be to work till 9:30! And on the weekends, I naturally am awake first nearly every time. Only when Lauren had a business meeting every other Wednesday morning at 7:30 did she have to be up first. Must be nice! :)
  • We watched the romantic comedy “Definitely, Maybe” Wednesday night, and I gave it my thumbs up. I also found a new favorite actress, Isla Fisher, who is engaged to Borat actor Sascha Baron Cohan. You may best remember her from her role in “Wedding Crashers.”
  • It was Labor Day weekend one year ago that I was caught with an air freshner hanging in my rearview mirror, obstructing my view. I was forced to spend a night in jail.
  • The Twins… uh, never mind. They have not played well of late.

It’s late on Tuesday evening, and Lauren, Roscoe, and I are chilling on the couch, watching the Twins play their most difficult opponent this season, the Seattle Mariners.  Despite the Mariners owning the league’s worst record, they’ve played the Twins extremely tough in seven games in August, and have jumped out to an early 2-0 lead tonight.  The Twins are in the middle of their longest road trip in nearly 40 years due to the Republican Convention being in town, and their road record is nothing to brag about.  The team really needs to go at least 7-7 in these 14 road games to stay in the race, I believe.  I have a really bad feeling about tonight’s game though.  I’m going to guess 9-1 Mariners.

If you’ve followed my Top 100 Country Artists Countdown, you’ll have to wait a while longer.  I have the top 25 list completed, but now need to write a little blurb about each.  I thought the first 3/4 of the list was pretty well-written, but I haven’t gotten in the “zone” yet when trying to complete my list.  I have to be in just the right mood so I can plow through it.  Maybe over the weekend.

Speaking of the weekend… no, never mind, that’s too far away yet.  I have no idea what we’ll do over my big three-day weekend.  A few ideas have been thrown around, like going to the Black Hills, or as Lauren just mentioned, going to Toronto.  But I think we’ll wind up sticking around here, saving our pennies.  I could make a trip home to claim my birthday present, but we’ll be right back there again at the end of September for Carpenter Bash V.  This year’s attendees are still very much up in the air.  There are only four I can say for certain are coming–me, Lauren, Jason, and Nick.  No one else has 100% said yes.  By the way, besides me, only Patrick and Jason can say they’ve been to each of the first four Bashes.

The big excitement of the week at work has been the launch of the new website.  Well, the continued preparation of the launch, anyway.  Josh and I have been spending every waking minute at the office entering products, writing copy, gathering spec, troubleshooting, redesigning, linking things… but I understand it will finally go live sometime between now and tomorrow morning.  Check out www.microboards.com for the new, bright, flashy site.  If you check and see a dingy purple and gray site, it hasn’t switched over yet.

Lauren and I made a quick bike ride over to the Wedge tonight to grab a few odds and ends.  Lauren has been suffering from a terrible toothache all day and figured she could only eat soup.  I picked up some beef intended for stir fry, and mixed it in with an assortment of our many CSA veggies which turned out pretty tasty.  And that’s where we are now.  The Twins just blew a good chance to tie the game, and I’m slightly angry.

Birthday Party a Hit! August 25, 2008

Yesterday’s birthday celebration was a hit for many, and just plain mystifying to a few. Throughout the course of the day, we welcomed friends in and out of the house to help us drink up that keg of Premium, the beer of exceptional quality. I was up bright and early, ready to begin the day. Lauren cooked me my favorite breakfast of sausage gravy biscuits and eggs while I chilled on the couch and watched Scrubs. Jason and Brad were the first guests to arrive, and among the last to depart, and got their money’s worth on keg beer.

Throughout the day, we welcomed over Nick, Liz, Patrick, Steve, Travis, Andy, Feeney, Katie, Sarah, Walsh, Josh, Krista, Jaime, Christian, Tim, Kate, Steve and Anne Poulter, Pete and Sarah Anderson and baby Abby, and Nate. Pretty good turnout of 26 people total! I received a few gifts and cards, and was very thankful so many were able to take in the day’s events.

Some of the day’s highlights included Liz’s goofy golf heroics, me getting caught in an awkward lie, Travis’s beer spills, WeFest stories from Steve C, Steve P running the grill, shots with Nate, my cardboard cutout entertaining some while scaring others, and what I thought was an arrythmia. I thought the funniest moment of the day came from Josh, who knew virtually no one at the house and took Jason’s verbal abuse for no apparent reason while sitting in the living room with what appeared to be a very mismatched group, watching the Olympic closing ceremonies.

I received cards from Grandma Bell and the Kleinsassers, and also cashed in my Amazon gift certificate from Mom and Dad, getting several seasons of TV series on DVD—Dexter, Flight of the Conchords, and Weird Science. The Krogman girls left me a nice voice mail Saturday evening. Apparently there is more to come from the Glanzers as soon as I get home, but as of now I’m not sure when that will be. And 20-some friends left me Facebook greetings.

All in all, a very good 26th birthday weekend!  Thanks, everybody!

And Now… to Enjoy My Birthday August 24, 2008

It’s my first entry as a 26-year old… so far, nothing seems too much different.  Friday, my last day at 25, was spent at the Eagan Community Center where Lauren’s friend Amanda had her wedding reception.  Nightlife cut her a great deal, as long as I DJ’d.  It was a small but fun crowd.  Country seemed to be the popular music of the night, though Haddaway’s “What Is Love” and N’ Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye” stole the show.  After the dance, Lauren and I stopped off at Granite City for a birthday beer, as the clock had just struck midnight.

Saturday was my birthday, but I was off to Jordan to DJ a dance at the country club.  It was the nicest venue I’ve worked so far.  I was able to park right next to the door and carry the equipment like ten feet inside.  I barely even worked up a sweat.  Amazing.  I was told to be there early cause guests would be arriving at 2:30.  Well, the wedding must have gone long cause people didn’t really start coming till 3:30.  Of the 240 in attendance, I bet half were over 50, and no one fell between the ages of 3 and 25.  So dancing was minimal, but the most effective songs of the night were polkas and waltzes.  And again, “What Is Love” got them out on the floor.  I earned a nice tip and was home by 12:30.

So today we celebrate.  Lauren picked up a keg of Grain Belt and is cooking me breakfast as I write this.  What a turtle dove she is!  Jason and Brad just walked in and are joining me for the first beer of the day.  We’re expecting a nice crowd throughout the day to help us polish off that keg.  So, if you’re not up to much today, swing on by bearing presents!

Busy Birthday Weekend Ahead August 21, 2008

The weekend is nearly here, but unlike the last couple weekends, there will be minimal rest and relaxation.  Friday is the big day at work for me and Josh.  The new website we’ve spent weeks working on could be completed with one last full day of work.  If all goes well, we might see a new site by tomorrow afternoon!

I have to take off work a little early to get ready for the Krueger wedding in Minnetonka/Eagan.  Lauren’s friend Amanda is getting married in the afternoon, and I agreed to DJ the dance.  As of now, we still haven’t decided how to work things out.  I’d have to drive to work in Chanhassen, come 21 miles back to Minneapolis to get Lauren, go back out to Minnetonka for the wedding, then drive through rush hour traffic all the way to Eagan to set up for DJing.  I hope Amanda isn’t too crushed, but it makes far more sense for me to skip her wedding and just go straight to set up for the dance.

Saturday morning, Lauren and I are going to pick up my special birthday keg!  Since I DJ that night, we have to push the celebration back till Sunday, which poses a problem: how do we chill the keg for 24 hours?  We can’t pick it up on Sunday, so we have to find a way to keep it cold.  Luckily, Luke works at the Marriott downtown and agreed to put it in a big walk-in cooler overnight.  He also invited us over to try out the breakfast buffet free of charge.

Then at noon it’s off to Jordan for another one of those crazy wedding dances that start at 2pm with the hope of it lasting all hours of the night.  We’ll have to take off around 12:30 to get out there and set up on time.  It really sucks when wedding couples try to have their receptions start so early.  No one wants to sit around for ten hours, especially me, especially on my birthday!  But I was assured double pay, so that softens the blow a little.

Finally, Sunday I can relax a little.  Lauren has promised to cook up a delicious breakfast, and then Jason and Brad Gausman are coming over ahead of the rest of the crowd to get started on that keg.  As of now we really have no idea who to expect as guests.  Not even Sarah and Walsh can confirm as they’ll be coming back from another South Dakota trip.  Whatever mixed group of friends stops by, I’m sure it will be a good time.  And if no one shows up, I guess we’ll have the beer to ourselves!

I received a comment from a loyal reader after my last blog entry, telling me to focus less on the romantic Lauren stories and revert back to the old beer drinking tales. Unfortunately, I’ve gotten in too much trouble over the years repeating things that shouldn’t have been repeated, even though they made for excellent reading. It has taken almost five years, but I’ve finally agreed to keep mind-boggling Patrick quotes, drunken Jason antics, awkward Nick stories, and other friends’ most embarassing moments to a minimum. I’m more than happy to share my own downfalls still!

Biiiiig Three!!!!

On Monday night, I had the season tickets from work and invited the L Gang—Lauren, Liz, and Luke. The Lynch brothers were also there for an event thanking volunteers. Despite the pitiful loss, we had a good time, and afterwards Lauren and I headed over to the Marriott where Luke works for a couple drinks and appetizers free of charge. Luke also gave me one of those rubber mats you put under the beer taps.

Last night there was talk of heading back out to the Metrodome for a Twins-Athletics game with the Rosoks, but after enduring a painful loss Monday night, we decided to stay in and watch the game from home. As usual, I picked the wrong game to attend, which has been the story of the year, as the Twins destroyed the A’s 13-2. The Twins are just 7-9 at home games I’ve attended this year, despite their overall home record being a very impressive 45-22. So when I don’t go, they’re 38-15. And as you all know, I have a direct effect on the outcome of games.  Oh, by the way, Lauren and I have now seen every American League team this season except the Indians, of all teams!

I also rolled up my sleeves and did an hour’s worth of dishes. I don’t know how we dirty up so many dishes. Most of them were mine and Lauren’s from just the last week. I tried counting individual pieces that I washed—cups, spoons, forks, odd measuring devices, tupperware, plates—and was in the 120’s when I lost track. I finished a hair before 10:00, soaked head to toe with sweat. Clearly my prescribed medicine has not taken effect yet. I was told it needed at least a full week before the body would start to respond.

This Sunday we’re having a little birthday celebration at the house for me! I’m of course turning 26 Saturday, but will be out DJing a wedding dance in Jordan—the town, not my sister. There will be a keg and lots of healthy vegetables! Everyone is welcome!

Also, longtime DSU friend and fellow Twin Cities resident Matt Hanson would like to invite everyone out to see his popular country band North Gone South this weekend. Here’s the rundown, straight from the NGS newsletter:

This week is jam packed with country dancing fun! NGS will be at GB Leighton’s Pickle Park Thursday night for their first “A” list venue. With a huge stage, awesome staff, and of course your favorite country band, this is one you won’t wanna miss! Friday night the group heads down to the Hopkins American Legion. Anyone living down there knows it is a great local music venue. Saturday, NGS will be back on the road headed North to the Chisago Roadhouse. The Roadhouse is another “A” list club and hosts some of the biggest names in regional country music.

This weekend was a good ol’ time. Lauren and I had a bit of a “date night” Friday with the roommates away. We got some take-out sushi and watched the Twins dismantle the Mariners, then went out for ice cream and took in Tropic Thunder in the theater, which was quite funny by the way.

Saturday we rode our bikes up to the Metrodome as part of a promotion to get half-price tickets for the Twins game. There we met up with Chris Ahrendt and watched the Twins blow a 5-0 lead before coming back to win 7-6 in the ninth. That evening, the whole Ahrendt clan stopped by our house to chat, then Chris, Carol, Lauren, and I went over to the Black Forest to reminisce over a few brews. It was an excellent time catching up with the Ahrendts, and long overdue!

On Sunday we headed down to Bloomington for a Sunday brunch with the Poulters before Lauren’s brother heads back to college. Lauren’s grandma was even there from Iowa. Despite being in her mid-80s, she drove all the way to the Twin Cities. She had us all laughing during a commercial for some weed repellent. As the weeds slowly faded away into dust, Grandma Joyce said, “What’s that burning? Is that marijuana?” It was the last thing we expected to hear out of an 85-year-old’s mouth.

I was just browsing through some old e-mails and thought I’d share the ten most recent nicknames that Lauren and I have called each other. Decide for yourself whose are funnier!

Lauren has recently called me…
chocolate parrot
snuggle nut
cute bear
nice pickle
honey bear
delightful turkey
delicious linguini
fuzzy cardigan
sweet banana
charming walleye

And I have recently called her…
lover bundle
cute reindeer
playful kitty
cuddly koala
spunky squirrel
baby snail
angel gums
snapping dolphin
smiling pelican
sweet onion peel

Considering neither of us has used the same adjective more than once, I’d say that’s pretty impressive. While I focus primarily on animals, Lauren likes to mix it up with some foods and inanimate objects. If I had to go with one of those ten names to call Lauren all the time, I’d choose Baby Snail for the sole reason of it rolling off the tongue. If Lauren were to settle on one of those names for me, I guess I’d prefer Charming Walleye for the oddity of it.

Speaking of nicknames, Lauren recently referred to someone she didn’t like as an Ass Hat. God only knows what a real life Ass Hat would look like, but for some reason it had me in classic Marcie Glanzer-like hysterics for some time just thinking about it. God, I’m laughing hysterically again just typing this. What’s the matter with me?

Roscoe Domenichetti

Roscoe Domenichetti

Who would have ever thought that they’d see me out walking a dog, carrying around a plastic sack to pick up poop from people’s yards?  Or sleeping with a dog who prefers to sleep with its nose right smack in my ass?  Or waking up at 6 to a dog yelping and howling to be fed?  Well, over the last few months, I’ve had no choice but to care for roommate Sarah’s dog fairly regularly.  Nick and Lauren have done the same, probably even moreso than me, but the fact that I have always been known as anti-pet, cowering away from playful dogs and throwing cats off my lap, is what makes the situation so amusing.

This weekend has been no exception.  Sarah left Roscoe to our care while she traveled with Walsh to South Dakota.  Roscoe has spent every waking minute following me around, especially while we eat.  Lauren and I were adventurous and ordered take-out sushi last night and came back to the house to eat while watching the Twins game.  Roscoe wanted that raw fish so bad, but all we’d feed him were little scraps of pickled ginger and wasabi.  Roscoe was desperate enough for food that he gobbled up that wasabi like nothing.

Later, we went to bed.  I closed the door to the room as I wanted some peace while I slept.  But somehow, when I woke up, there was Roscoe cuddled up next to me.  The second I sat up, Roscoe raced behind me and took over the pillow, and nothing could make him budge.  I resoted to laying on top of him, using him as a pillow.  Then, right on cue at 6am, Roscoe pounced out of bed and began howling for food.  Normally Sarah would feed him on her way to work, but it was left to me.  The only way to quiet him down is to get up and feed him, so even on Saturday morning I was up and at it bright and early.  Roscoe is well-trained and knows not to eat until you give him the code word, which is a loud, high-pitched girlie “Frreeeeeeeeee!!!!”

I slept for a while longer, and at 10 was up and ready to start the day.  Roscoe was practically crying to go for a walk.  We teased him a few times, going towards his leash or even saying “walk.”  Roscoe whimpered and wailed until we finally leashed him up and headed to the streets of Minneapolis.  Little kids stopped to pet him and he sniffed out every last hydrant and tree, searching for dogs who had marked their territories.  Yes, it was a glorious morning for Roscoe.

Yes, Roscoe and I are quite the pair.  Hell, we’re even having a joint birthday party together August 29.  Who knows what crazy adventures we’ll have next?  Lauren is looking very forward to the day she can buy a dog of her own.  I have always been very hesitant, but at least now I know I could be trusted to take care of one… as long as its small and doesn’t leap up on me.

It’s the Summer Olympics, and surprisingly, we’ve actually been watching a lot of it this week.  I’m not usually very interested, but Jason has been over the last couple days to watch with Lauren while I’m at work.  The event that has most peaked my interest is surprisingly beach volleyball, though the whole Michael Phelps swimming craze is hard to ignore.  Jason and Lauren were up late Wednesday night watching, and when I woke up this morning, Jason was right back up watching basketball.

Today I had a doctor appointment at Park Nicollet to see if there was anything that could a) be done about my profuse sweating; b) be done about my tingly, numb sensation in my arms; and c) prevent a future panic attack like the one that took place last Tuesday at work during training.  All three were predictably related, and the doctor suggested it is due to my high blood pressure.  One prescription is all it took for all three.  This new medicine, which I will try for 90 days, will block certain chemicals from getting to my heart, thereby slowing its rate and taking some of the strain off it.  The doctor also said it wouldn’t hurt for me to cut back on drinking some and get a little more exercise.  So, all is well for now.  I’m not in any great or immediate danger, just gotta watch the old ticker!

After work, Lauren and I took a bike ride around Uptown and went down to Lake Calhoun, and who should we run into but Nick “Big Wheels” Sandbulte, biking around the lake as well.  We stopped and pointed out the oddity of running into each other, then kept along our ways.  As I write this, Lauren is upstairs bathing, Nick is nowhere to be found, Sarah is welcoming Walsh back to Minnesota after a business trip, and Jason is passed out cold beside me on the couch.  Yes, even Jason needs the occasional hour or two of sleep.  Must have been that 750 of Canadian Mist kicking in.

Tomorrow at work is the most anticipated day of the year regarding attire: shorts and sandals day!  I will say, however, the timing could have been better.  This week’s temps have only been in the 70s and low 80s.
