It’s my— October 29, 2009

It has been a while since I’ve posted something unrelated to the goings on in my life. So here is a post with me going off on a topic that needs addressing: this type of commercial on TV or radio that goes like this.
Woman: “It’s my—”
Man: “It’s my—”
Asian Woman: “My—”
College Student: “It’s my online checking.”
African Man: “My—”
Old Man: “It’s my—”
Young Couple: “My—”
Group of Construction Workers: “My—”
Chinese Man: “It’s my online checking.”
Kid: “—online checking.”
Businessman: “—online checking.”
There are so many of them, and they’re all the same. A group of diverse people interrupting each other saying how something is theirs, and they’re really excited about it.
And there are many variations of this, like the 2004 Twins intro video that was played before games. More creative, but equally as painful.
Corey Koskie: “The future—”
Jacque Jones: “The future—”
Matthew LeCroy: “The future—”
Brad Radke: “The future is now.”
Eric Milton: “Is now.”
Luis Rivas: “Is now.”
Ron Gardenhire: “Now.”
Torii Hunter: “The future is now.”
What?! No it isn’t! The future is the future, not the summer of 2004. If the future of the Twins was a quick exit from the 2004 playoffs at the hands of the Yankees, then— oh wait, they were right about the future (see 2009 Twins).
Then they came out with those ones where people say…
Girl: “I am.”
Man: “I am.”
Boy: “I am.”
Man: “I am LeBron James.”
Woman: “I am LeBron James.”
etc.
No you aren’t! None of you are LeBron James.
And then even the big players got involved.
Girl: “I’m a PC.”
Man: “I’m a PC.”
Idiot: “I’m a PC.”
Jerk: “I’m a PC.”
This is no longer an original idea. It would be nice to not encounter these types of commercials anymore. Lauren knows how annoyed I am when I hear them. And then I try to reenact the commercials to emphasize just how bad they are which annoys her.
That is all.
Weekend Update; Comcast October 25, 2009

Not a whole lot new from here. Lauren and I are just wrapping up a fairly restful, enjoyable weekend.
Friday after work we used a gift card to Laredo’s in St. Louis Park. We will have the review available soon on our food blog, but I will say that it was a very unique Tex-Mex dining experience. That night we chilled at home and continued watching House on DVD, the next show up in our series of TV shows on DVD. It is taking me a while to get into it because, unlike awesome shows like Six Feet Under and The Wire, there is no arc from episode to episode yet.
Saturday we spent much of the day in Edina at the Galleria where Lauren used up our Crate & Barrel gifts cards from the wedding and completed her wish list. Let me tell you, that was a lot of fun for me. I did run into old VF co-worker Jeff Gwost though and had a friendly chat. At night Lauren was excited to break out her new kitchen gear and entertain some dinner guests. Apologies to golden birthday boy Jesse Cooney for not being able to join in his celebrations!
Today we wandered over to the Walshichetti house to watch the Vikings/Steelers game, which ended disappointingly. But the Chargers won easily over KC to improve to 3-3.
I also had my share of excitement with Comcast this weekend. We have had problems with our HD service and they sent out a technician Saturday morning who swapped out our bad box for a brand new one. After returning from our afternoon shopping spree, we were greeted by a strange repetitive clicking noise, which turned out to be the new cable box. The hard drive wouldn’t start up, making our DVR feature useless. I called Comcast back again at 12:30am and they assured us they’d come back Sunday to give us another new box. To make it up to me, the support guy offered me six free months of the premium sports package! Right now, there’s another Comcast technician in our apartment replacing the cable box, and he too is offering us some free programming for our run of bad luck. I could pick whatever I wanted for free between HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and Starz, and I chose Showtime because of Dexter, though HBO with Curb and Flight of the Conchords was very tough to pass up. Our failures with Comcast have actually been a good thing!
Happy Birthday Grandpa: The Response October 22, 2009

Jordan put her three children up to this witty video wishing Grandpa a happy 49th birthday!
It’s not quite as entertaining in our household, especially when one of us had to run the camera, but I tried my best to one-up my sister’s birthday greeting!

1. The most addicting website I’ve yet to run across is sporcle.com. I can’t stop playing around on there. There are thousands of games that all have the same premise of naming everything from a list, like name all the actors from a certain show, or name the 3 most populous cities in each state, or name all the NL Rookies of the Year. I just can’t contain myself.
2. I’ve given up on playing Scrabble on my phone after two solid years, and yesterday downloaded The Sims 3 to play when I’m sitting in my car in the Supervalu parking lot waiting for Lauren to get off work. My Ryan Sim already died after 3 days after getting electrocuted repairing a fridge.
3. I attempted to deposit our wedding checks at Wells Fargo the last two days. On Tuesday, the teller only let me cash the ones that just said my name on them. Today, the same teller agreed to let me deposit the ones that said Ryan “or” Lauren on them. Still I am sitting here with a wad of Ryan “and” Lauren checks that cannot be deposited until we have a joint account, apparently.
4. Over the course of the last two weeks, my gym activity has nearly stopped due to the wedding and honeymoon, and not surprisingly, I went up from 235 to about 241. I am planning to start back up with the gym soon so I don’t get any more out of shape.
5. Tonight, Lauren and I stopped at the Poulters’ and picked up the bulk of our wedding presents. We also stopped off at rehearsal dinner site Biryani for takeout, and used our new wedding silverware, plates, and wine glasses for the first time. Lauren was surprised we only got 3 of the 12 place settings we registered for, but our Crate & Barrel gift cards should help with that.
6. This year, I have been invited to no fewer than six Halloween parties. Not sure if it’s just because Halloween is on Saturday this year, but it seems everyone is hosting their own party. I will have to pick only one, though, as I supposedly am DJing Friday night. I despise coming up with costumes, but I thought it would be funny to dress head to toe in orange with some thin pink stripes interspersing and go as one of Big Bird’s legs.
7. My DSU laptop is already in rough shape with the sound out, and at the wedding our other laptop that was playing the slideshow took a high heel to the trackpad and is also on the fritz. We may need to invest in another laptop for my DJ business.
That’s all for tonight!
Back and Refreshed October 19, 2009

It was a glorious 11-day break from everything, but this morning it is back to reality as I head back to the office. At least I’m coming back refreshed and ready to get going on stuff. It will be a long week as Lauren is working 10 hours of OT, which means getting to work at 7 every day, but I’ve never been one to complain about being early for things. I was able to write this at work before the clock struck 8 this morning, in fact.
After we returned from the honeymoon Wednesday night, I still had Thursday and Friday off. I can’t remember what all I did but it wasn’t much. I started on the first batch of thank-you notes one afternoon and drank an entire Brewhouse growler another day. Saturday night a random group of friends over for a leftover wedding booze party, where Tripoli and Outburst were played and much booze was consumed. Even a sweater-clad Roscoe was in attendance. Sunday we watched lots of football during the day, and at night Lauren and I went to Eagan to catch up on this season of Dexter with Liz, Curt, Duane, and El Gato.
Well that’s probably all for the excitement from here for a while!

It’s been quite a while since I’ve written anything here, but we have been extremely busy the last week with all the wedding stuff. The preparation for the wedding, the rehearsal, the wedding, the reception, the gift opening brunch, the honeymoon trip… I feel like I should give a quick recap of everything that happened, if for no other reason than my own documentation purposes.
Before I start… for those of you not on Facebook, here’s my big wedding photo gallery.
Thursday
Took off work and ran a bunch of errands. I can’t really remember what all we did that day as it now seems like several weeks ago. I think we ended up picking up my tux, buying some gifts for the wedding party, and stopping off at Black Forest Inn for a drink with the Husebys.
Friday
In the morning, we ran more errands and made some final preparations. Lauren had her nail appointment while I went to find some movies we could watch while up north.
That afternoon, family and friends began arriving in town. Lauren met up with her Canadian college friends at the hotel, while I stayed home and got ready for the rehearsal.
At 6 we had rehearsal at the chuch, and immediately afterwards we all headed over to Biryani in Edina for the dinner, which a lot of people said was the best Indian food they’d ever had. After dinner, Lauren and I went back to the Sheraton to hang with some of the guests. I dropped Lauren off at her sister’s house at 1:00 and came home and went to bed one last time as a bachelor.

Rehearsal dinner at Biryani in Edina. Mmm!
Saturday
I was up bright and early at 7:30, and went to the local Rainbow Foods (sorry Lauren!) to get mixers for the bar. Then I went over to the Sheraton to meet the family and we went and set up decorations at the reception hall with Walsh and Luke.
I raced home and took a shower and packed my things and headed over to the Radisson where Lauren and I had the Metrodome Suite reserved. I decided to take another shower there, then changed into my tux and went over to the church for pictures.
There were a few snags with the wedding. The flowers were delivered to the wrong place, but Patrick raced over to the Profile and picked them up. And the organist late, but I had my aunt Patra step in and play some piano until he could arrive.
The wedding went off very smoothly once the organist arrived. For Lauren, the hardest part seemed to be walking down the aisle with her dad. I didn’t sweat too bad but my knees were shaky as I stood at the front of the church for about 40 minutes. But before we knew it, it was all over and we were pronounced man and wife.
Then it was off to the limo where the wedding party was driven around for some pictures and stopped off at the Bulldog in northeast Minneapolis for a drink. We arrived back at the Profile to the grand march at 6:00 and mingled with the crowd for a while before dinner.
The speeches were highlighted by co-best man Jason’s recollection of his eight favorite questions from our giant interviews we did with each other on my website. He even orchestrated a Kanye interruption with co-worker Clayton.

Clayton interrupts Jason's best man speech Kanye style.
The dance was crazy. The dance floor never died the whole night, though the loud music did seem to scare off the older crowd almost immediately. Among my favorite images of the night included looking back at the end of the “C’mon Ride the Train” train and seeing Nick and Lauren’s grandpa bringing up the caboose. Matt Poulter’s epic flip over Collin Malepreciousmetal’s arms during “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was shocking but hilarious once he survived. All the Weezer songs were big hits with my side of the crowd. The “Time Warp” also got a great response from the large contingent of Rocky Horror fans on hand. And how could any dance end without everyone huddling around screaming “hold me closer Ryan Glanzer” to “Tiny Dancer.” Great time.
Sunday
At 10:30, the Mrs. and I headed over to the Poulters’ place for brunch and to open a mountain of gifts. One of the things I’ll be working on today is thank-you notes to everyone, but thanks everybody for the killer gifts!
In the mid-afternoon Lauren and I departed for the North Shore for our mini three-night honeymoon at the Lutsen Resort. On the way we stopped in Duluth at the Brewhouse for dinner. We arrived safely around 9:00 but promptly fell asleep by the fireplace after a trip to the jacuzzi tub.
Monday-Wednesday
The rest of the time we were up north, we took part in many wholesome activities, like hiking to see the fall colors, getting our first professional massages, riding a gondola, driving up to Grand Portage to a casino, and eating lots and lots of gigantic meals. I just weighed myself and I put on five pounds over the three days. But it may have been well worth it… we did some good eatin’!

Taking in the fall colors on a hike around Oberg Mountain.
Thursday and Beyond…
Sadly, Lauren must return to work today and tomorrow. But I had saved up enough vacation time to stay home until Monday. So right now, I’m living it up on the couch, catching up on internet things. I think I’ll make a trip to the gym this morning and try to make sense of this leftover liquor from our open bar. And by “make sense of” I mean drink it.
2 Days to Go October 8, 2009

It’s Thursday morning and I am not at work! Nor will I be for the next 12 days. Instead, Lauren and I are busy with final preparations for the wedding.
My biggest area of concern is a very unresponsive limo company who has never confirmed our reservation or even charged my credit card. I am trying to give them money but they won’t take it! Maybe their low, low prices were too good to be true.
This morning we started the day with breakfast at French Meadow just down the street. I had an odd moment with the waitress, who I was positive I recognized from TV… but where? We have been watching so much Six Feet Under that I thought for sure she had to be on the show. I was racking my brain trying to think of what character she was when it hit me. She wasn’t from that show. She is the woman on those really terrible Minneapolis Saturn commercials with the idiot husband who blows up the car and drives a car off a cliff! I asked her and she said it was true, but seemed a little embarrassed.
Well, I am going to put together our slideshow now.
I Was at the Greatest Game Ever October 7, 2009

Gomez scores; Twins win the AL Central
320,000 fans tried getting tickets to yesterday’s winner-take-all Twins-Tigers showdown at the Metrodome in the one-game playoff for the division title. I was lucky enough to get tickets in the 7th row behind first base. Liz, Curt, Sarah, and I watched on for 4 hours, 37 minutes, and twelve innings of the most gut-wrenching, nerve-wracking, mind-numbingly unbelievable sports game I’ve ever seen.
The largest crowd for a regular season game in Metrodome history stood throughout almost the whole game, waving Homer Hankies and screaming. The noise was so deafening that it was tough to talk to the people right next to me, especially when Orlando Cabrera’s two-run homer gave the Twins a 4-3 lead in the seventh. Everyone was hanging on every pitch. Every pitch ended up being excruciatingly important.
Time after time after time, the Twins looked like they’d blown the game. Detroit had runners on first and third with nobody out in the ninth, but by some miracle Joe Nathan got out of it. They left the bases loaded in the 12th with one out and Bobby Keppel of all people got out of the jam. The Twins used all their relievers except Liriano as well as most bench players. And the Twins kept faltering when they had chances to win, like Alexi Casilla getting thrown out at home on a fly ball by Punto.
Finally, Casilla’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the twelfth ended it and the Twins mobbed at home plate after a 6-5 win. No one left their seats (except an exhausted Sarah) for ten minutes after the game, still screaming and waving Homer Hankies as the Twins took a lap around the Metrodome field.
I literally kept thinking it was over, getting dejected, wanting to leave, and then bam! The Twins would come up with a miraculous play to turn everything around. And my hopes would be so high that the Twins would win the game, and then the Tigers would do the same thing and escape a jam. Just back and forth for so long. It really was exhausting.
I am just happy to say that I was in attendance for that game. I wasn’t following the Twins in 1991, but this game had all the drama and heroics of Game 7.
And then I walked/jogged 45 minutes home, completely physically exhausted and soaked, partially from the rain but mostly from standing and cheering for so long.
It was such a great game that I’ve barely even thought about the fact that they have a game against the Yankees in a few hours.
I will write later about the much more important matter at hand—our wedding this weekend!
Scoping Out Campus for Next Weekend October 3, 2009

When I first learned that the Gophers would be playing at home on our wedding day, I circled this date on the calendar as the day I’d head down to campus and see just how bad the traffic, parking, and commotion would be. Since it’s a big game vs. Wisconsin, I figured it would be very comparable to the homecoming atmosphere we’ll see next weekend vs. Purdue.
The verdict? Nothing to worry about!
It took me all of ten minutes to drive from our apartment to the church taking I-94, about an hour before kickoff. Traffic was a little tight as I crossed the bridge over the Mississippi, but I drove right up to the church with little problem. There is a parking lot reserved for church parking, and it was mostly empty. My only advice would be to get there early if you want to be assured of a parking spot at the church. I’d say no more than 35 cars will fit in that lot.
Traffic from the church to the reception shouldn’t be an issue. The game will be two hours over by the time the wedding ends. Parking at the reception site is very limited, but there is a big parking garage nearby called the North Star Professional Center lot, kitty-corner from the main entrance.
So, my worst fears of campus being an absolute madhouse are put to rest, but it is homecoming next weekend, so you never know.
HUGE Weekend of Local Sports October 2, 2009

It should be quite the weekend in the Twin Cities for sports. In three days, there are five huge events. Saturday the Gophers take on Wisconsin at TCF Field, while the Wild open their season at home vs. Columbus. Sunday, the Twins finish out their season against the Royals in their final game at the Metrodome. Meanwhile, 200,000 spectactors are expected for the Twin Cities Marathon, with former roommate Sarah signed up to run, health pending. (And let us not forget that the Timberwolves open their preseason against the Bucks in Mankato!) Monday, Brett Favre and the Vikings take on the Packers in what is expected to be one of the most-watched NFL gamese of all-time. So not only are all the events going to attract thousands of people, but they are all meaningful and all five sports matchups feature Midwest opponents (Green Bay, Columbus, Kansas City, Wisconsin, Milwaukee). Should be an entertaining weekend!
I only plan to go to the Twins game Sunday, but I also plan to drive down to the U of M campus Saturday around noon to see how bad the traffic and parking are in preparation for next weekend’s wedding events.
Here are my Minnesota sports predictions for the weekend.
Friday
Twins 4, Royals 2
Saturday
Badgers 34, Gophers 28
Royals 3, Twins 2
Wild 5, Blue Jackets 1
Sunday
Twins 11, Royals 5
Timberwolves 111, Bucks 97
Sarah Domenichetti finished 7th in the Twin Cities Marathon
Monday
Vikings 30, Packers 20
