Band Anyone?
Over the last few years, Walsh and I have often discussed how fun it would be to start up a jazz band of sorts. I would like to break out the trumpet again someday. Walsh is a trombone master. Lauren can do some vocals (at least after working up the courage after a drink or two). We just need a few more instruments and we can get a band going! I’m kinda halfway serious about it… who’s interested?
Thanksgiving
This year’s Thanksgiving was spent with just me and the wife at the apartment. With Lauren working Friday we couldn’t go far, but we had fun anyway. Lauren slaved over a 22-pound turkey and all the other dishes all day. I helped out a little with the potatoes! We ate dinner around 6 and it was pretty damn delicious! I don’t think I gained six pounds over the course of the meal like two years ago. Wish we could have gone back to Carpenter, but we’ll be back soon enough for Christmas.
Rest of the Weekend
My Friday was pretty productive at home. I spent two hours scrubbing the kitchen in the morning and played lots of MLB The Show 09 in the afternoon. That night we watched another Best Picture, 1965’s The Sound of Music, which was reviewed on my Best Picture blog. Saturday I got a little too couped up with my third straight day spent in the apartment and figured we should go out and do something at night, so Lauren and I met up with Walsh (but not an ill Sarah) for some bowling at Memory Lanes. Despite my finger injury I managed three good scores ranging from 124-151. Earlier that day I was so bored I started watching the first season of Family Ties on Netflix on PS3. I also watched Pineapple Express which was even more hilarious than expected. And today it was football all day. Will be an interesting week at work now that colleague Josh has left for a new career in web development. We’ll see if/how my role changes.
Other
I suppose happy birthday wishes are in order for sister Jordan Nicole Krogman, who turned 25 today. I understand she spent the day working a long shift at the hospital (or wherever it is she works). Tomorrow is Grandma Bell’s birthday. I understand she will be celebrating with lots of booze and illegal fireworks. Tomorrow is also the two-year anniversary of the day I met Lauren for dinner at Chapati Indian Restaurant! We can’t do much celebrating tomorrow though as I agreed to be in Luke’s play, with rehearsal starting tomorrow.

Acting?
I just received a text message from good friend Luke Katuin, asking me if I would be able to rehearse Monday night. Of course my reaction was “This must have been sent to the wrong person. I’m not in a play.” But Luke confirmed the text was for me. He has cast me in some sort of improvisational role, as well as stagehand manager for a play he’s producing. I haven’t decided if I will go along with this or not. What do you think? Is it time to return to my acting roots for the first time since DSU’s productions of Meet Me in St. Louis and Fiddler on the Roof?
MVP! MVP!
Joe Mauer won the American League MVP on Monday, which wasn’t surprising since he had by far the best year of any player in the AL, but it was still suspenseful as many were lobbying for Derek Jeter to win the MVP as some sort of lifetime achievement award. Thankfully Mauer destroyed the competition and became the second Twin in four years to win MVP. One Japanese writer from Seattle voted for Miguel Cabrera ahead of Mauer, keeping him from being a unanimous selection. Could Minnesota have another MVP this year with Brett Favre?
Birthdays
Happy belated birthday to good friend and local music up-and-comer Travis Bolton, who turned 27 on Monday. And happy birthday today to co-best man and Nebraska native Jason LaPlant, who turns 27 today. Late November is by far the busiest birthday period of the year amongst people I know. That and early February.
Back to Best Picture Project
For those of you who had some interest in the project, I recently posted my two latest Best Picture reviews over on my blog for that project. Be sure to read up on 1960’s The Apartment starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, and 1964’s My Fair Lady starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.
In Memoriam
It’s been a somber week here at the office as we all mourn the very unexpected passing of our VP of Marketing and Sales, Mike Laven. I reported indirectly to Mike for four years as he was my boss’s boss. Last night was the “celebration of life” for Mike in Stillwater. He was in a wheelchair for most of his life and was a star wheelchair athlete. On occasion we would have lunch together at Na’s Thai Cafe. He’ll certainly be missed around the office.
Happy Birthday Mom! November 19, 2009

Darn you, Krogmans! I held out all day hoping Jordan would put her children up to something clever to wish Grandma Marcie a happy birthday, and then I was going to copy it. But the day’s nearly over and I haven’t seen a damn thing on Jordan’s blog. Hmm… she must have mailed a birthday greeting.
Well, here’s wishing Mom a happy 48th birthday! I feel like I can mention her actual age here because everyone is always so shocked to hear my parents are just 20 years older than me.
Mom probably celebrated her milestone birthday (rare age where the first digit doubled equals the second digit) by hauling the mail to residents of Carpenter, South Dakota. I imagine she and Dad are spending the evening breaking into the booze. Better call the substitute mail carrier now!
Trust me, the Christmas present I’m making will make up for the lack of birthday present.
Finger, Caribbean, Birthdays November 18, 2009

Good news, everyone. My pinky finger is going to be okay… in three months. You no doubt saw my gruesome photo from Saturday’s basketball mishap. I was in a splint for a couple days before going to the orthopedic surgeon Monday. He told me I was fortunate as the tendons in that finger were merely torn, not severed, so I should keep my pinky strapped to my ring finger and slowly exercise it. Maybe in three months I’ll have my full range of motion back. Anyway, the injury looked much worse than it is.
In more pleasant news, Lauren and I are in talks with a travel agent as we try to finalize our official honeymoon this winter. We are considering options all over the Caribbean as long as they’re all-inclusive. Some top choices include resorts in the Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Jamaica, and Panama. Or we could go to Miami, but I hear there’s a trinity killer that highly resembles actor John Lithgow on the loose. If you have any advice or recommendations before we make a decision, let us know!
Finally, happy birthday wishes are in order today to father-in-law Steve Poulter, who turned the big 6-0 today. Also happy birthday to good friend, former DSU roommate, and aspiring math professor Chris Ahrendt who turns 27 today. And let’s not forget that tomorrow, the 19th, we should all wish my mother, Marcie Glanzer, a happy birthday! I’ll have to wait and see what the Krogman children come up with this time so I can copy their present.

Last night we went to Fuji-ya in Uptown for my birthday dinner, which was a surprise party planned by Lauren! She invited Liz and Curt, Tim and Kate, Christian and Jaime, and Jason. Though the secret that there was some sort of gathering was leeked to me, I didn’t know any of the specifics until we left for the restaurant last night.

2009 - 27th birthday - Lauren planned a surprise dinner at Fuji-Ya Japanese restaurant in Uptown. Photo credit: Liz Burke.
This got me to thinking about other birthdays in recent years.

2008 - 26th birthday - Lauren bought a keg and invited 25+ guests over to the house on a Sunday afternoon.

2007 - 25th birthday - Went to the U Otter Stop Inn with some friends for karaoke, including Katie Lynch, who also celebrated her birthday that day.

2006 - 24th birthday - The gang went out to dinner at Timberlodge and then went dancing at the country night club in Cottage Grove.

2005 - 23rd birthday - Went to Applebee's with friends and then Twins game in a suite.

2004 - 22nd birthday - Roommates went to Lindee's for drinks. Low-key for once!

2003 - 21st birthday - Some Valleyfair friends and I went to the State Fair. Travis bought me lots of beer to celebrate my 21st.

2002 - 20th birthday - Party with VF Friends at Luke's apartment in Shakopee.
I don’t have photos prior to 2002 readily available at this time, but I’m sure I could dig some up.

Here’s a photo gallery from my recent trip to Las Vegas and San Francisco! Starring me, Lauren Poulter, Josh Kleve, Barry King, and Sinbad.
And here’s a gallery from last night’s first night back home when we celebrated Patrick Lynch’s 26th birthday and Sherrie Hart’s 34th birthday.
Chargers lost today… hey, what can you expect from a team that was 4-8 at one point in the season? Since they were the late game today, I can honestly say they were the 5th-to-last team to be eliminated this year, which is kinda a nice achievement. Better than the Vikings, right?

I’m sitting here preparing to DJ my final event of the year, the annual Founders Day dance. I figured I’d be done DJing for the year, but when someone specifically goes out of their way to request me to DJ, I guess I’d better give it another shot. Besides, the money that I’m making for this night of work will pay for hotel rooms for our upcoming trip, which I’m sure I’ll be writing about more soon. Lauren and I were originally going to go to San Francisco for a couple days before my trade show in January, but we’ve altered the plans a bit.
In other news, it’s Day 4 of 5 of vacation from the full-time job. It’s the longest break of consecutive days I’ve had off of work since my first day on January 3, 2006. Not to say that I’ve just been lounging around the house all this time. Wednesday I walked over seven miles around Uptown and checked out a couple local gyms, and at night went to the Timberwolves vs. Suns game.
Thursday Lauren and I did lounge around most of the day before heading over to the Poulters’ for Thanksgiving. By my count, it was the first time in my 27 Thanksgivings that I was not celebrating with the Glanzer family. Friday I took another long walk during the day, this time to downtown. Later, Lauren and I attended her friends’ annual day-after-Thanksgiving dinner at 50’s Grill in Brooklyn Center, then returned home to celebrate Jason’s 26th birthday.
And today, Lauren and I took another long walk around Uptown and got lunch at a Thai restaurant. Then it was time for me to go earn a few bucks by DJing. There’s still one final glorious day of rest and relaxation tomorrow, and plans are to do some Christmas decorating, watching the Vikings game, and perhaps celebrating the 1-year anniversary of my first date with Lauren. Hard to believe it’s been a whole year already!
Happy birthday, by the way, to Jordan who turned 24 today, and Grandma Bell who turns 70-something tomorrow!
Birthday Party a Hit! August 25, 2008

Yesterday’s birthday celebration was a hit for many, and just plain mystifying to a few. Throughout the course of the day, we welcomed friends in and out of the house to help us drink up that keg of Premium, the beer of exceptional quality. I was up bright and early, ready to begin the day. Lauren cooked me my favorite breakfast of sausage gravy biscuits and eggs while I chilled on the couch and watched Scrubs. Jason and Brad were the first guests to arrive, and among the last to depart, and got their money’s worth on keg beer.
Throughout the day, we welcomed over Nick, Liz, Patrick, Steve, Travis, Andy, Feeney, Katie, Sarah, Walsh, Josh, Krista, Jaime, Christian, Tim, Kate, Steve and Anne Poulter, Pete and Sarah Anderson and baby Abby, and Nate. Pretty good turnout of 26 people total! I received a few gifts and cards, and was very thankful so many were able to take in the day’s events.
Some of the day’s highlights included Liz’s goofy golf heroics, me getting caught in an awkward lie, Travis’s beer spills, WeFest stories from Steve C, Steve P running the grill, shots with Nate, my cardboard cutout entertaining some while scaring others, and what I thought was an arrythmia. I thought the funniest moment of the day came from Josh, who knew virtually no one at the house and took Jason’s verbal abuse for no apparent reason while sitting in the living room with what appeared to be a very mismatched group, watching the Olympic closing ceremonies.
I received cards from Grandma Bell and the Kleinsassers, and also cashed in my Amazon gift certificate from Mom and Dad, getting several seasons of TV series on DVD—Dexter, Flight of the Conchords, and Weird Science. The Krogman girls left me a nice voice mail Saturday evening. Apparently there is more to come from the Glanzers as soon as I get home, but as of now I’m not sure when that will be. And 20-some friends left me Facebook greetings.
All in all, a very good 26th birthday weekend! Thanks, everybody!
And Now… to Enjoy My Birthday August 24, 2008

It’s my first entry as a 26-year old… so far, nothing seems too much different. Friday, my last day at 25, was spent at the Eagan Community Center where Lauren’s friend Amanda had her wedding reception. Nightlife cut her a great deal, as long as I DJ’d. It was a small but fun crowd. Country seemed to be the popular music of the night, though Haddaway’s “What Is Love” and N’ Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye” stole the show. After the dance, Lauren and I stopped off at Granite City for a birthday beer, as the clock had just struck midnight.
Saturday was my birthday, but I was off to Jordan to DJ a dance at the country club. It was the nicest venue I’ve worked so far. I was able to park right next to the door and carry the equipment like ten feet inside. I barely even worked up a sweat. Amazing. I was told to be there early cause guests would be arriving at 2:30. Well, the wedding must have gone long cause people didn’t really start coming till 3:30. Of the 240 in attendance, I bet half were over 50, and no one fell between the ages of 3 and 25. So dancing was minimal, but the most effective songs of the night were polkas and waltzes. And again, “What Is Love” got them out on the floor. I earned a nice tip and was home by 12:30.
So today we celebrate. Lauren picked up a keg of Grain Belt and is cooking me breakfast as I write this. What a turtle dove she is! Jason and Brad just walked in and are joining me for the first beer of the day. We’re expecting a nice crowd throughout the day to help us polish off that keg. So, if you’re not up to much today, swing on by bearing presents!
Busy Birthday Weekend Ahead August 21, 2008

The weekend is nearly here, but unlike the last couple weekends, there will be minimal rest and relaxation. Friday is the big day at work for me and Josh. The new website we’ve spent weeks working on could be completed with one last full day of work. If all goes well, we might see a new site by tomorrow afternoon!
I have to take off work a little early to get ready for the Krueger wedding in Minnetonka/Eagan. Lauren’s friend Amanda is getting married in the afternoon, and I agreed to DJ the dance. As of now, we still haven’t decided how to work things out. I’d have to drive to work in Chanhassen, come 21 miles back to Minneapolis to get Lauren, go back out to Minnetonka for the wedding, then drive through rush hour traffic all the way to Eagan to set up for DJing. I hope Amanda isn’t too crushed, but it makes far more sense for me to skip her wedding and just go straight to set up for the dance.
Saturday morning, Lauren and I are going to pick up my special birthday keg! Since I DJ that night, we have to push the celebration back till Sunday, which poses a problem: how do we chill the keg for 24 hours? We can’t pick it up on Sunday, so we have to find a way to keep it cold. Luckily, Luke works at the Marriott downtown and agreed to put it in a big walk-in cooler overnight. He also invited us over to try out the breakfast buffet free of charge.
Then at noon it’s off to Jordan for another one of those crazy wedding dances that start at 2pm with the hope of it lasting all hours of the night. We’ll have to take off around 12:30 to get out there and set up on time. It really sucks when wedding couples try to have their receptions start so early. No one wants to sit around for ten hours, especially me, especially on my birthday! But I was assured double pay, so that softens the blow a little.
Finally, Sunday I can relax a little. Lauren has promised to cook up a delicious breakfast, and then Jason and Brad Gausman are coming over ahead of the rest of the crowd to get started on that keg. As of now we really have no idea who to expect as guests. Not even Sarah and Walsh can confirm as they’ll be coming back from another South Dakota trip. Whatever mixed group of friends stops by, I’m sure it will be a good time. And if no one shows up, I guess we’ll have the beer to ourselves!
