Sick Day! October 23, 2008

Every year at work I am allowed ten vacation days and five sick days.  Historically, my sick days have gone to waste because I don’t get sick and I am far too honest (as you all know) to use a sick day for any other reason.  But today, I am home sick.  And by “sick” I mean I’ve been confined to rooms within close proximity to the bathroom most of the day with the dreaded “D” word.  I think it’s in everyone’s best interest that I stay away from work today.

That said, the day has been extremely productive so far.  I slept till 10, watched Sunday’s episode of Dexter online, and then spent over three hours cleaning the downstairs.  I’ve got laundry going, I did a load of dishes, I picked up an entire garbage bag of trash from the downstairs, I dusted, I swept the floors, and even mopped in some troublesome areas, and it’s still only 2:30.  With the rest of my day, I plan to take Roscoe for a brief walk (he’s been staring at his leash and whimpering for hours) and then get some dinner cooking for my working girl, who should be home around 5:45.  Nice little role reversal there.

Last night Jason was over and we all watched Game 1 of the World Series.  I guess I would say I’m rooting for Tampa Bay, but I just want there to be seven good, tight games.  Last night was a good start as the Phillies won 3-2 on the road.  Tonight it sounds like Walsh will be over to see Sarah after spending the last week on the road for work and we’ll probably check out Game 2.

For anyone interested, Little Sister has posted a preview of my and Lauren’s engagement photo session from last weekend.

Also of very exciting note today: for the first time in many years, my Discover Card balance is $0.  I intend to never charge anything on that account ever again!

For those of you wondering whether or not I made it back to Minnesota… I did!  And I owe it to 5-Hour Energy supplements you can buy at any gas station.  I was dozing off on the way to Watertown, but I took one of those bad boys and I was wide awake the rest of the way.  We stopped in Watertown for 40 minutes at the Knit Nook and after that basically made it back in usual time.

Of course that was the ending to the weekend.  It all started Friday after work when Lauren and I made the drive from the southwest metro to Carpenter.  We visited with Mom and Dad for a bit, then headed to bed.  Saturday we spent much of the day playing with Peyton and Emmy before Jordan took us out on a very windy engagement photo session.  We went through several outfit changes… as did Jordan, who ripped her pants bending down on the very first shot of the day!  After dinner, Lauren and I joined Alex and Ann on a trip to the Yale bar and then a little jaunt to Huron.

Sunday morning was the big Hudson Krogman baptism and the whole family was together in church for the first time in… well, several years anyway.  We returned home for dinner and headed back to Minnesota in the afternoon after watching the Vikings lose.  After returning home, Lauren and I caught the end of the ALCS where the Rays knocked off the Red Sox to advance to the World Series.  We were just cheering for anyone but Boston, so we were happy.

The highlight of the trip was perhaps receiving my very generous birthday present from Ma and Pa.  I can now breathe a huge sigh of relief in regards to my credit card debt, so thank you again!  Hopefully, at age 26, that will be my last financial bail-out from Mom and Dad.

Saturday afternoon, I packed up the car with DJ equipment one final time and headed 17.7 miles northeast to the Shoreview Community Center to DJ a wedding ceremony and reception.  The wedding was small—only 75 people total—and the bride and groom had no additional wedding party.

Things got off to a rough start right off the bat when I was setting up, testing out the music, and the mother of the bride (the only other person in the room besides me) heard a country song playing.  The music was so quiet she really had to stop and concentrate, but once she realized it was Randy Travis playing, I was in for it.  “What is this?!  Didn’t my daughter tell you absolutely no country whatsoever?! Are you trying to ruin our day?  Turn it off!!!!!”   “I’m sorry ma’am, I’m just testing the levels, I didn’t even realize anyone else was in the room.”  “Well I’m here and I can hear it and it’s making me sick… TURN IT OFF!!!!”

This is from the bride’s side of the family, who despite admitting the groom’s side was big country fans, asked that no country be played, and any requests must go directly through them.  This bride was actually really funny and nice, but she and her mother were violently offended by the thought of country music ruining their big day.

Beyond that, the night was actually a pretty good succcess.  I played the processional and recessional songs for the actual ceremony, which took place in the very same place as the dance, so I didn’t have to move the equipment.  The crowd was small but kept the dance floor hopping all night.  But as with any small crowd who has to sit in one room for eight or nine hours, the dance died around 10:45 and I was allowed to leave by 11:30.  I made off with a $50 tip and headed home happy.  I am done for now, but I did agree long ago to DJ the Joe Allen / Krista Sullivan dance in May 2009.

In other news, the other job (the full-time one) was chaotic this week.  So as not to get in any trouble, I will not mention the company name or any specifics, but a couple new products are coming out next week, and Josh and I were asked Thursday, with an already huge pile of work, to produce all of the marketing materials for one of the new products to have ready for the sales team Monday morning.  My Thursday and Friday were insanely busy, but I think we’ll have everything ready to go.  In the past when I’ve been asked to produce the new photos, webpage, spec sheet, e-mail blasts, etc., I’ve been given at least two weeks to complete the activities.

So my weekends are free for a little while.  I’m taking advantage of that next weekend by heading home for the nephew Hudson’s baptism.  Not that I would ever make such a big deal of a baptism, but it’s a reason to go back and see what’s shakin’ on the farm.  Jordan has also agreed to take some engagement photos.  Then we can get our little write-up in the Clark County Courier!

Stock Market and Vikings Plunge September 16, 2008

Aside from Friday’s big night, my highlight of the weekend was Sunday.  Thanks to Saturdays always being filled with DJing, my favorite days have become days with no plans of any kind, and unless there’s a holiday, that day is Sunday.  Not so much that I like sitting and doing nothing all day, but the fact that I don’t have to be anywhere at any particular time.  I spent almost the whole day on the couch watching the Vikings lose, the Twins lose, the Chargers lose, and several episodes of Dexter on DVD.  We ordered Chinese (which Roscoe wound up eating most of) and at night we stopped over at Tim and Kate’s for a congratulatory beer and called it a night.

I think I’m lucky that I didn’t become as attached to the Vikings as I did the Twins.  The Twins, though they’ve had their share of playoff chokes in the 2000s, at least are competitive and sometimes exceed expectations.  The Vikings on the other hand fail every year.  Any time there’s a season where the team is expected to do well, they fall well short of expectations.  It’s tough to watch them.  I absolutely knew that 15-0 lead Sunday wouldn’t hold up.  If there’s one area in particular they fail at worst, it’s catching the ball.  Since the days of Moss, this team hasn’t had a reliable receiver.  Their receiving corps is like the Twins bullpen this year.  It’s times like these I’m lucky to be a Chargers fan.  Despite San Diego also being 0-2, at least they deserved to win both games.  They lost one on a last-second lucky play by Carolina, and lost Sunday on a botched call by the refs in Denver.  They have a very light schedule coming up and I will be surprised if they don’t get to 3-2 by Week 5.

Monday at work, I received many congratulations from co-workers who had heard about my exciting engagement news.  I’m sure there are a lot who are still unaware, but those who are had some interesting comments.  Said Lay, “I knew it!  I called it at the Christmas party!” which he did.  I remember him distinctly saying that after seeing us singing together during that live piano show.  Said Mark in Shipping, “Run, man, run. Get the hell out while you still can.”  He also made some reference to her being a “black widow” or something… nothing personal, just women in general.

Even I noticed yesterday that there was some sort of horrible day on Wall Street with a plunge of 500 points… or something.  I really don’t know what any of that means, even after two people tried explaining it to me.  Lauren and I stopped by Tim and Kate’s again to drop off CSA vegetables and Tim was watching CNBC with a beer in hand, more interested in the stock market news than the Twins game.  Hmm… until I am directly affected somehow, I don’t think I’ll get it.

Yesterday after Lauren and I checked out of the Depot hotel, we returned to the house and I had three hours to relax before heading to St. Paul to DJ as wedding dance.  I had absolutely no interest in going to that dance.  It was a perfect day to hang out on the couch and watch TV with the rain pouring outside.  It took everything I had to get up and leave, and once I got to the Wabasha Street Caves I was very miserable.

It sounds kinda cool to have a wedding reception in an actual cave, but it was less cool than I imagined.  It was just like any other reception hall except it was darker and mustier, and the staff there was mostly grouchy.  Someone on staff refused to let me park in the parking lot, saying it was for guests only.  I ignored him, but maybe should have taken his advice as the rain and wind caused a power line to go down in the lot.

The bride was from the area and the groom was from Mexico, so I played about half Spanish Latino music that I didn’t know.  Dinner was good and the couple was nice, but the dance was a pretty big bust.  I got out with a small tip at midnight and raced home.  When you consider I made $150 yesterday and maybe would have spent $20 or so doing something at home, it is a nice $170 swing.  But coming off the big engagement excitement of Friday and wanting to stay home with Lauren, I don’t think it was worth it!

Lots of congratulations have come pouring in after the Facebook announcement, as one might expect.  Lauren is really overwhelmed trying to comprehend that she’s now engaged at the age of 24.  I, on the other hand, am six years behind both siblings so it doesn’t seem unusual to me at all.  I don’t feel any different at all.  It will be interesting over the next few months to see what decisions are made as to when and where future wedding events could be held.  I would guess next year this time, but you never know!

FYI, the ring I purchased is 1.17k diamond and an 18k gold band.  I bought it about three weeks ago, and considering the very large sum of money it cost, I began carrying it with me at all times a few days ago so I wouldn’t lose it.  I did actually lose it once, though, right before I gave it to Lauren.  I knew it was in my backpack somewhere, but I could not find it.  I tore through that bag and finally found it buried under some socks.

Today I’m just gonna hang out and watch the Twins and Vikings games, and maybe in the afternoon we will head out to Belle Plaine to a BBQ at Josh Kleve’s house.  Then it’s back to work Monday.  No plans for the week until next weekend when I DJ a dance in Oak Grove.

Last night I got engaged to Lauren!  It was quite the crazy couple of days as I lied to Lauren about my whereabouts and strange behavior.  I told her Wednesday night not to make any plans for Friday because I had a surprise waiting.  Thursday after work, I paid a visit to Steve and Anne Poulter to get the go-ahead.  They were pleased and gave me the thumbs-up.  Friday I left work at noon and made a few purchases for the night, then checked into the Depot downtown, where Luke Katuin had secured a presidential 3-room suite for a fraction of the cost.

I came back to the house around 5 and picked up Lauren, who was all packed up but still wondering where we were going.  It didn’t take more than a few minutes to arrive downtown, where I decided to just lay it on her right away.  Maybe it didn’t go down exactly like Lauren had envisioned, but she said yes and I popped that expensive little ring on her finger.  We took a few moments to soak it in, then I just had to go calling family and a couple friends to spread the news.

At 8 we walked down to a nice dinner at Wasabi, then returned to the hotel bar to have a celebratory drink with Jaime, Christian, and Jason.  The party carried over into the suite, and we passed out after midnight.  In the morning, Luke stopped by to serve us breakfast in bed, and who should answer the door but Jason.  Luke was absolutely bewildered, as well he should have been!  We were locked away in the big private bedroom, so we didn’t even know anyone slept over.  We hit up the jacuzzi, ate breakfast, and were home by noon.

So, it’s official!  No further plans have been made, but I’m sure that will all come soon.  Now it’s off to St. Paul to DJ a wedding dance in a cave.
