Acting?
I just received a text message from good friend Luke Katuin, asking me if I would be able to rehearse Monday night.  Of course my reaction was “This must have been sent to the wrong person.  I’m not in a play.”  But Luke confirmed the text was for me.  He has cast me in some sort of improvisational role, as well as stagehand manager for a play he’s producing.  I haven’t decided if I will go along with this or not.  What do you think?  Is it time to return to my acting roots for the first time since DSU’s productions of Meet Me in St. Louis and Fiddler on the Roof?

MVP!  MVP!
Joe Mauer won the American League MVP on Monday, which wasn’t surprising since he had by far the best year of any player in the AL, but it was still suspenseful as many were lobbying for Derek Jeter to win the MVP as some sort of lifetime achievement award.  Thankfully Mauer destroyed the competition and became the second Twin in four years to win MVP.  One Japanese writer from Seattle voted for Miguel Cabrera ahead of Mauer, keeping him from being a unanimous selection.  Could Minnesota have another MVP this year with Brett Favre?

Birthdays
Happy belated birthday to good friend and local music up-and-comer Travis Bolton, who turned 27 on Monday.  And happy birthday today to co-best man and Nebraska native Jason LaPlant, who turns 27 today.  Late November is by far the busiest birthday period of the year amongst people I know.  That and early February.

Back to Best Picture Project
For those of you who had some interest in the project, I recently posted my two latest Best Picture reviews over on my blog for that project.  Be sure to read up on 1960’s The Apartment starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, and 1964’s My Fair Lady starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.

In Memoriam
It’s been a somber week here at the office as we all mourn the very unexpected passing of our VP of Marketing and Sales, Mike Laven.  I reported indirectly to Mike for four years as he was my boss’s boss.  Last night was the “celebration of life” for Mike in Stillwater.  He was in a wheelchair for most of his life and was a star wheelchair athlete.  On occasion we would have lunch together at Na’s Thai Cafe.  He’ll certainly be missed around the office.

Friday after work, the plan was to meet up with Jason and perhaps go to a bar.  Jason got off work at 1, though, and set out to kill five hours until we got home.  Well, you can see where this is going.  Jason went to the Green Mill down the street from our apartment, and struck gold when the power went out and stayed out for four hours, allowing him all the free food and drink he could handle!  Jason showed up at our place shortly after 6 and was out cold on the couch by 9, but we were very happy for him and his good fortune.

Saturday morning, Lauren and I drove 40 miles east to Stillwater, where we met with local jeweler James Hunt, who was recommended to us by Lauren’s sister.  This guy has his own studio where he makes rings, and we’re at the point where we better find some wedding rings.  He makes rings out of recycled gold and will make anything we want, whether it’s a plain ring or has lots of carvings or designs.  His prices were also shockingly low, so we were sold!  We’ve got a couple weeks to think of what exactly we want him to make.

For lunch, we found a place called Smalley’s Caribbean Grill.  We each ordered basically the same meal of spicy jerk chicken and brisket with some sides.  I was pretty impressed, but expected a little more heat, especially with this special firey atomic pepper they gave me for free as a novelty.  We were supposed to meet Walsh and Sarah for lunch, but we kinda jumped the gun and ate without them, and then they arrived and we sat and watched them eat at a different restaurant.

We spent an hour or two wandering the streets of town, looking in unique shops.  If you haven’t been to Stillwater, its downtown area is reminiscent of a place like Deadwood.  It sits next to the St. Croix River and has an unusual draw-bridge that raises to let boats through.  Kinda a charming little touristy area, but its roads are more reminiscent of San Francisco with steep hills.

Sarah told us of an ice cream store that we needed to try called Nelson’s.  We walked about a mile uphill to get to this ice cream store, where I ran into former Valleyfair co-worker Sean Devereaux.  The ice cream here was nothing special, as far as taste goes, so it must be the serving size that makes it famous.  Words can’t really describe how much ice cream they give you.  I ordered a waffle cone, single size.  I am pretty sure they packed a a half-gallon of ice cream onto that cone.  Walsh saw mine and ordered a child-sized cup of ice cream, and he too was blown away.  No , I didn’t finish, but could have.

I ordered the single scoop. Walsh ordered the child size.

I ordered the single scoop. Walsh ordered the child size.

Next, we went to the St. Croix Vineyards for a wine tasting.  For just $5, we got to try all ten wines they produce.  It was a very cool experience and of course reminded me of the movie Sideways.  It was just a little sip of each kind of wine, so we certainly weren’t drunk afterwards.

Sarah and Lauren try some delicious wine.

We got home around 6:40 and were supposed to be at the airport by 7:50 to pick up Tim and Kate, who were returning from a week-long trip to Colorado.  But we were so tuckered out from our long day that we both fell fast asleep.  Just by chance I woke up at 8pm and we sped down to the airport, a good 40 minutes late, to take Tim and Kate home.

Friday evening after work, Lauren and I went to the tuxedo shop in Edina where I modeled a couple different tuxes, and of course, I went with the weird one.  That means fathers and groomsmen also get to wear the weird one!  Actually I thought it was kinda cool.  We’ll be wearing the long morning coats, with the tails down to the knees.  And the pants are striped, not solid.  Lauren took some pictures which I’m sure will be shared soon.  I also intend to purchase monocles for all males in the wedding, if for nothing more than some funny pictures and mementos.

Afterwards, we ate dinner at Market BBQ on Nicollet, a place we had been thinking of trying for a year but never got around to it.  It was very delicious, but in my opinion wasn’t quite as good as Famous Dave’s.  We came back to the apartment, and soon Jason joined us for a very impressive game of Trivial Pursuit.  Possibly because we were all a little tipsy, the game took hours. Lauren was the first to collect all her pieces and move to the middle of the board for the victory, but fell asleep and quit!  Jason was the next to get all his pieces and kept getting absurdly hard questions about actresses from the silent film era.  I was next to move into position for the win and kept getting ridiculously hard questions about tennis and golf.  So we continued going back and forth, over and over again, until Jason finally got an easy movie question for the win.  Lauren literally could have woken up after an hour of sleep, come back out and still won.

A dramatic look at the three-way tie that carried on into the night.

A dramatic look at the three-way tie that carried on into the night.

Saturday, I woke up very late and immediately went for a 3-mile run around Lake of the Isles.  After spending the afternoon watching the Twins fall to 5-16 on the road, Lauren wanted to go to the gym, so I tagged along and sat in the hot tub for a while and did some light swimming.  We both signed up for accounts at About.com’s Calorie Count website, which is pretty cool.  You enter everything you eat for a day, all the activity you take part in, and it grades and analyzes you.

When we returned home, I found out you can make your own quizzes on Facebook, and I couldn’t wait to try it out by making a very funny Which Glanzer Family Member Are You? quiz, which so far has been taken by a handful of people.  It looks like I did a good job of matching the answers to each family member, because Jordan took the quiz and was most like herself.  If you are on Facebook, I encourage you to go over and do the quiz yourself right now and let me know how it turns out for you!

Late in the evening, Lauren and I took a walk past our old house on 26th St and went to the late-night Happy Hour at Jasmine 26 for dinner, where Vietnamese entrees, drinks, and appetizers were half off.  We sat outside and ate by candlelight while sipping some sake.  Very romantic, indeed!

This weekend we also finished Season 3 of The Wire, which Jason lent us, and started Season 4.  Season 3 was my favorite so far, as a major in the Baltimore police force decides to cut crime by essentially legalizing drugs in certain designated areas, thereby at least cleaning up the rest of the town.  It works, and crime falls 14%, but once people find out what he’s done, will they let it stand or shut it down?

Today, we are almost certainly going to go get our bikes from the Rosoks’ garage.  We’ve been planning on doing this every weekend since early April, and I really do want to have my bike back for the summer.  That will be a good 3-mile ride, so that will be our exercise for the day.  We’ll also probably watch the Twins game and more of The Wire.

It was just like old times Friday night when Jason and Patrick came over for the night to drink heavily and play a new version of Trivial Pursuit where you download recent questions online.  In two games, the Jason/Patrick team won both times over me and Lauren, though we were more competitive than expected.

I proved to only be good at answering questions about sports, and some TV, while Lauren was on top of her game with the book and history questions.  Jason proved he knows everything there is to know about trivial matters, but struggled at times with geography and history questions.  Still, I don’t know anyone who could beat Jason in a trivia game.

Not much noteworthy happened Saturday aside from a lot of sleeping.  Lauren and I went to Tim and Kate’s at night for some grilling, but we showed up too late and missing the actual grilling process.  We actually made it home at a decent hour unlike normal.

This morning I’ve been very busy with laundry and dishes.  I’m always annoyed when someone leaves their clothes in the dryer.  What is the rule about taking someone else’s clothes out for them?  I gave them a good window to come claim their clothes before moving them myself.  Three loads later and the stranger’s clothes are still there.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been very busy with my freelance web design projects for B&B Sheet Metal & Roofing and Classic Hall (link coming very soon!).  I haven’t been paid for them yet, but when I do, it will go a long ways towards credit card bills and wedding savings.  I’ve also been asked to do some website work for Luke’s food-delivery-turned-theatrical-production company FOOD, Dusty’s painting business in Las Vegas, Travis & Jonny want a makeover on their site, and a couple other projects.

And then Friday night was the strangest website request.  I was at India House near the Mpls. Convention Center picking up takeout and making small-talk with the cashier.  One thing led to another and I told him I do graphic/web design, and he asked if I could make them a new website.  “We’ll pay you in free food!  Er, uh, we’ll pay you!”  the man said.  Well, either way I guess.

And if you haven’t seen it yet, I redesigned the front page of ryanglanzer.com.  The other pages of the website do not match, but I’ll get to that sometime.  I also want to integrate this blog into that website someday when I get ambitious.  I know it can be done but don’t know how.

Will Expensive Mouthpiece Solve Problems? April 28, 2009

Last night, I slept for the first time using the sleep apnea mouthpiece which I purchased earlier in the day from a specialty dentist in Edina.  I forked over $250, and insurance footed the other 90% of the bill… so yeah, it was quite expensive.

Basically, it’s just a big piece of plastic that is molded to fit my teeth, top and bottom.  It is unusual in that it holds the lower jaw out a half-inch so the tongue won’t fall back over the windpipe in my sleep.  It also keeps the mouth partially open so I can always have constant airflow.  This is supposed to keep me breathing steadily throughout the night, thereby solving my sleep apnea problems.

It’s too soon to tell if it worked or not after just one night.  It isn’t uncomfortable and is relatively easy to put in and take out.  The only downfall is when I take it out in the morning, it takes an hour for my jaw to go back to its original location, which means I can’t bite or chew during that time.  I also woke up in the middle of the night and freaked out when I couldn’t open my mouth, but I’m sure that will go away in time.

Travis, Daniela, Georgi, and me

Travis, Daniela, Georgi, and me

Here are some other news briefs!

  • Looks like the dog name vote is wrapping up, with Harley in the lead with 6 votes.  Get those votes in now!
  • This weekend, Lauren and I went to the Bulldog to meet Travis, Georgi, and Daniela for a couple toddies.  Georgi and Daniela, native Bulgarians, are my old Valleyfair friends from 2002-2004 and have moved back to Minnesota.  Good to see them!
  • I’m continuing to work on the website for Classic Hall of Annandale.  I was back up there Saturday morning for the third time to do another photo shoot.
  • My first DJ gig at the Profile Event Center as the in-house DJ is scheduled for Saturday, June 13.  The dance goes from 4pm to 2am!  Long hours, but good pay for me.
  • Tonight I am going to the Twins/Rays game with Patrick, Jason, Nick, and Liz.  Lauren is meeting a friend for dinner.  The Twins are 0-2 when I attend this year, but they’re 2-0 on Tuesdays.  Something’s gotta give!
  • In my role with this start-up company that my bosses have started, I’ve now written the first 75 product descriptions and am waiting for the next batch.  Each product requires three original paragraphs, and I have very little information to work off.
  • I am back in class the next few Thursday nights with Flash III.  Maybe, just maybe, we’ll finally get in to something I can benefit from!
  • Did I mention we found out our wedding is the same day as Minnesota’s homecoming?  Eep.

Well that’s all for Tuesday!

Thursday Update: 112 Deposits, Y, Weekend March 12, 2009

Our time at 112 has come to an end, but there’s still some unfinished business as we all received our security deposit statements in the mail yesterday.  We were disappointed to find out that we got barely half of our deposits back.  Some of the charges were legitimate, like our unpaid utility bill and a broken mirror, but a lot of it is complete BS.

For instance ,we were charged $230 for yard maintenance.   One time during the whole year that we lived there the landlord had someone stop by and mow our yard because the city complained that the grass was too long.  We had our mower stolen out of the garage early on and were unable to mow it right away.  So apparently, that one time someone came over and mowed our 10′ x 10′ lawn, we were charged $230.  He is obviously just pulling a number out of the air.  When we did mow, it took all of ten minutes with a push mower.  And if the landlord actually did pay someone $230 to mow that tiny square of grass and dirt one single time, then I want that lawn care guy’s job.

The other charge in question is $145 for the removal of garbage from the alley after we moved.  Yes, we did leave some garbage in the alley, but this would have shown up on the utility bill since Solid Waste is a function of the city.  So I called the City of Minneapolis and talked to a woman in the Solid Waste department.  “We show no charges for garbage removal,” they said, but to be sure, passed me over to the City Inspection Office.  “Hmm, we don’t show anything either, maybe it is included on the utility bill, let me transfer you,” said the inspector.  The third woman also confirmed that no, there was no charge.  So our landlord is apparently lying to us.  Unless he can show us a copy of the bill or receipt, we’ll have to take some sort of action.

Not that any of this comes as a surprise, seeing how the previous tenants complained to us about how they received so little of their deposit back.  It’s also little surprise because of my history with bad landlords or property managers.  I’ve had nothing but problems with every landlord I’ve ever had with the exception of Rick Mueller my last semester of college.  The thing is, they have your deposit money and they don’t want to give it back.  Nick and I never saw a penny of our Parkway Apartment deposit, and not only that, they demanded an extra $90 in addition to the deposit money.  Oh well, I think our new apartment seems much better.

Lauren and I have also been doing our share of exercise lately at the YWCA.  Finally, after months of procrastinating, we are making a good effort to work out as often as possible.  Our goal early on is to go four nights a week.  I have gone five of the first eight days so far, spending most of my time on the elliptical machines.  No weigh-ins yet.

The next few days should be entertaining.  Tonight, Jason is stopping by the apartment to hang out.  He’ll be the second guest since we got situated, as Patrick visited us on Monday night.  We might hit up happy hour at Green Mill and go back to the apartment and watch some Best Picture movies.  We’ve got 1950 through 1952 waiting for us.  Tomorrow evening is Andrew Kartak’s birthday party at Decoy’s in Hopkins, and Saturday is Sarah’s birthday party in St. Paul.

By the way, no more free internet at home!  The unsecured network is now secure.  We are okay with waiting it out until we get cable, but we aren’t going to do that until we get a new TV, which we were hoping to get with our security deposit refunds, but of course since we were screwed over, we can’t get one.

Last night I got engaged to Lauren!  It was quite the crazy couple of days as I lied to Lauren about my whereabouts and strange behavior.  I told her Wednesday night not to make any plans for Friday because I had a surprise waiting.  Thursday after work, I paid a visit to Steve and Anne Poulter to get the go-ahead.  They were pleased and gave me the thumbs-up.  Friday I left work at noon and made a few purchases for the night, then checked into the Depot downtown, where Luke Katuin had secured a presidential 3-room suite for a fraction of the cost.

I came back to the house around 5 and picked up Lauren, who was all packed up but still wondering where we were going.  It didn’t take more than a few minutes to arrive downtown, where I decided to just lay it on her right away.  Maybe it didn’t go down exactly like Lauren had envisioned, but she said yes and I popped that expensive little ring on her finger.  We took a few moments to soak it in, then I just had to go calling family and a couple friends to spread the news.

At 8 we walked down to a nice dinner at Wasabi, then returned to the hotel bar to have a celebratory drink with Jaime, Christian, and Jason.  The party carried over into the suite, and we passed out after midnight.  In the morning, Luke stopped by to serve us breakfast in bed, and who should answer the door but Jason.  Luke was absolutely bewildered, as well he should have been!  We were locked away in the big private bedroom, so we didn’t even know anyone slept over.  We hit up the jacuzzi, ate breakfast, and were home by noon.

So, it’s official!  No further plans have been made, but I’m sure that will all come soon.  Now it’s off to St. Paul to DJ a wedding dance in a cave.

Too Much Tab September 7, 2008

If there was ever any hope left for Nick drinking at some point in his life, I think it went out the window Friday night.  Jason dropped by to chill and brought with him a bottle of Jag and a bunch of Tab energy drinks.  You drop a shot of Jag in the glass filled with Tab and slam it.  On the first drink of the night, Jason finished his Jag Bomb, sat for a moment, and threw it back up into his cup.  Nick got up and walked away, remarking on how he still can’t fathom why people would drink alcoholic beverages.  Shortly thereafter, Jason went back to make another drink and made a remark I never thought I’d hear: “Ughh…. too much Tab!”

Saturday, Lauren accompanied me to Maple Plain to DJ a wedding dance between a couple young kids from the country who met as sixth graders, then didn’t see each other for ten more years.  One day, they ran into each other at some sort of music festival and sparks flew.  They decided to have the reception at a place out in the deep wilderness.  It was a kinda cool venue, a park reserve full of little cabins secluded in the woods with a main event center, albeit a small one.  “Charmingly rustic,” as Lauren described it.  I had to drive my car down tiny dirt paths marked “Do Not Enter – Authorized Vehicles Only” through the trees.  But we got all set up and rocked the squirrels out of the feeding area with the music stylings of Glen Campbell, Charlie Rich, and Joe Diffie.  No tip was received, but they assured me they’d mail one.  We’ll see!

Today has been painful for me as a sports fan.  The Twins bullpen was back at it again, giving up more crucial runs.  There are just 19 games left, and the Twins are hanging on by a prayer.  Today’s loss was another gut-wrenching one, another game they should have won.  And as I write this, the Chargers are losing at home to the Panthers, a team they should easily beat.  So although today has been quiet and restful, I’m still unhappy.

I’m sure Jordan had good intentions when she and the Krogman family sent me a new game for my birthday. The game, called In a Pickle, is all about size: what can fit in what. There are hundreds of cards with nouns on them. You basically just try to play one of your cards on a stack of other cards. Can a feather fit in a mailbox? Can a gopher fit in a library? The game is completely open to interpretation and you can try to play anything anywhere, but you must be warned that you have to make a good case for it or you’ll be challenged by the other players.

Yes, good times were sure to be had, especially by me, Lauren, and Jason—an inseperable trio. Laughter, witty banter, silly arguments—oh, the fun! Ten minutes into the game, screaming and yelling led to the abrupt cancellation of In a Pickle with Lauren and Jason both declaring “I hate this game!!!!” Believe it or not, I actually was the calm one for once. The heated debate erupted when Jason persuaded me to part with him and vote against a move by Lauren.

In other news, tonight is the kickoff of the NFL season, a nice distraction from heartbreaking, late-inning Twins losses. My attention will never focus completely to football until baseball is all said and done with, but I’ll still be paying close attention to the Chargers game Sunday against Carolina, and of course the Vikings-Packers Monday Night Football game. I won’t go to any great details making NFL predictions like I did baseball, but if the Chargers and Vikings are ever to meet up in the Super Bowl, I think this is the year.

A few notes on TV… I finally got my three amazon.com DVDs in the mail yesterday (cashed in gift card from Mom & Pop). We watched the first episode of Dexter, which is really good although very confusing. You have to pay very close attention. Jason said I was cheating by having read the series synopsis on Wikipedia prior to watching the show, but unlike most, I want to know what happens going in because I’m very easily confused if TV shows or movies don’t make 100% sense right away.

We also watched the first episode of Flight of the Conchords, which I had seen before. It’s a show about a New Zealand folk duo trying to make it big in the US, to little avail, and they sing throughout the show which adds to the hilarity.

Next up, the complete series of Weird Science, which aired on USA in the early 90s.

Our trip to the 2003 MN State Fair

Travis, Claire, me, Amy, Daniela, and Georgi after seeing Charlie Daniels Band at the 2003 State Fair.

Friday night, as I mentioned, Lauren and I went to the Great Minnesota Get-Together.  For those of you South Dakotans who have only experienced the South Dakota State Fair, it’s much, much different.  At least ten times bigger with way more attractions.  Unless you love looking at farm equipment, the SD State Fair is a snooze fest.  This is the fifth time I’ve been to the MN State Fair.  In 2003, I went with a mismatched crowd from Valleyfair and had an amazing time.  It was my first post-21 experience and Travis bought me over $100 in overpriced beer to celebrate.

We went to a free Charlie Daniels Band concert rather intoxicated.  Charlie went to slow things down with a hymnal, and Travis and I hooted and hollered over the hushed crowd.  Some man in front of us turned around and asked “You guys want me to punch you in the face now or after the show?”  I replied, “Well, after the show I guess.  That would hurt to sit here with a punched face.”

In 2005, I took a day off at Valleyfair to take… ugh… Igor and Amanda to the fair.  Worst.  Day.  Ever.  Those two bitched and complained about everything all day.  Igor complained about it being too hot and too expensive (which it was), and Amanda complained about Igor having to be there with us.  Note that I haven’t spoken to either of them in two years.

Liz is amazed by the rodeo!

Liz is amazed by the rodeo!

In 2006, Liz asked me to go to the fair with her so we could see her high school friend in the rodeo.  I’ve never seen anyone so excited!  Liz flipped out when the big old bull hopped through a ring of fire.  Watching her react was far more entertaining than the rodeo itself.  Here she is long after the rodeo had ended, still trying to get a closer look at the horses.

Last year, I went back to the fair on a date with a girl named Jamie.  Things were going so-so until we ran across a booth that was airing the Twins game and I saw Scott Baker had a perfect game going to the ninth.  When the Royals broke up his bid for history with a walk and single, my night was ruined. Absolutely ruined.  Jamie wanted to continue going on rides and stuff, but I couldn’t manage.

That night, while watching the game for all of ten minutes, I saw Lauren for the first time and didn’t even know it!  Lauren had been at that game and was shown on TV applauding Baker after his perfect game was broken up.  We discovered this a few months ago when Fox Sports replayed that game.  I never saw Jamie again and three short months later, I finally met that cutie from TV!

And so in 2008, it seems only fitting that Lauren and I take in a night at the State Fair, which we did on Friday.  Lauren went earlier in the day to meet up with Jaime Berglund-Huseby, who works at the DFL booth.  I went to the fair directly after work, managing my way on the metro bus system.  On my ride there, I was sitting next to a group of underage hippie kids who were clearly drunk.  One larger fellow sat next to me and rubbed my back.  “You my boy!” he shouted, gin flowing from his breath.  He grabbed and shook me a little.  “This guy’s good shit!  You da man!”  I couldn’t help but think that this was Jason’s long-lost half-brother or something.  He was with lots of girls.  “Jolly, stop touching that man,” they said.  Apparently his name is Jolly because he starts drinking and has a fun time touching people.

Riding in one of those gondola-type things

Riding in one of those gondola-type things

At the fair, Lauren had her cheese curds and I tried a footlong walleye sandwich.  We walked through a few booths, checked out some of the exhibits, and finished the night with a terrifying ride on the slow-moving gondolas that take you 20 feet off the ground, from one side of the fair to the other.  I just couldn’t stop talking to Lauren about how I couldn’t believe those little cars could support us!  And how painful it would be if our car snapped off the cable and we landed on people below, shattering our necks.

On the way home, the bus dropped us off downtown.  Rather than waiting for a connecting bus, I declared it a good idea to walk home two miles.  Downtown Minneapolis was well-protected with a barrage of cops here for the Republican National Convention, but the further we got out of downtown and closer we got to that gray area between downtown and uptown, the uglier it got.  We hurried down the sidewalk to avoid a gang fight that was quickly escalating, only to come across what appeared to be a dead woman on the sidewalk.  She certainly wasn’t breathing or moving… I thought about calling the cops, but there were other people in the area and I figured someone had already done so.  I hope so!

Well, we made it home safely anyway, and with lots of exercise.

Now South Dakota State Fair memories, there’s a whole different article.  Back in the day it was “Can we go to the fair?  Can we go to the fair?”  “No!”  The fair was in Huron, which for us was the closest anything even remotely exciting came.  We wound up going about every year.  I once tripped Gov. Bill Janklow on the Midway.  Later in high school, I worked at the fair campgrounds for two summers with Bob Syring.  I could go into more detail about how Brandon befriended a bunch of criminals, but that really is another entire post in itself.
