In his first public interview since 2006, my father, Dick Glanzer, talks openly and candidly about life on the farm, angry barnyard animals, the future of Dick’s Garage, and looking forward to the big wedding this October. Plus, we learn once and for all if Dad ever plans to shave again!
Also on this Monday morning, we must all be sure to wish Lauren a happy 25th birthday!

Last night, Lauren wrote me a 40-question interview which I immediately answered and posted on ryanglanzer.com, the first new content I’ve generated for the website in a couple months. Unlike the funny interviews Jason and I have written for each other, I actually tried to give serious and honest responses to most questions, which makes for an interesting read. In hindsight I should have been funnier, but I will not change anything.
Yesterday I of course went out and purchased a used bike from Penn Cycle and had fun tearing around downtown Minneapolis. Yes, it felt very funny to be riding a bike, and even stranger to be riding on the streets with traffic in downtown. On Friday night we went to test out a couple bikes at Re-Cycle in Uptown. I told the guy at the store I hadn’t ridden a bike since high school and wondered if I’d still be able to do it, and he replied, “Yeah, it’s a lot like riding a bike.”
It definitely felt off to not DJ last night. Having a Saturday off made it feel like Sunday, so waking up this morning made it feel like Monday and I did not want to get up for work. It was a very nice feeling when I realized I didn’t have to. Today we don’t have much for plans. Lauren and I are talking about going for a walk to Figlio’s to watch the Twins game at 1 where they have $2 beer and $2 appetizers all afternoon.
Our 14 Hours in Byron August 3, 2008

Lauren and I saw a bit of everything on Saturday when we ventured 81.9 miles southeast to the town of Byron, just outside of Rochester, to DJ a wedding dance for a couple at a ritzy country club. Lauren saw my panic attack when the speakers were emitting a loud static noise during setup. It really sounded terrible and I deducted it was the Y cable that was the problem, so Lauren tried putting my worries to rest and drove into Rochester to a Best Buy and bought the most expensive cable they had. I’m not sure if it worked because the noise of the crowd could have drowned out the static noise, but I was at least calmed down!
The bride and groom actually had met me before when we DJ’d that dance in Wabasha, so they knew they were in good hands. This was possibly the largest crowd for a dance yet—275 guests, and they were all dancing all night, no matter what songs I played. 80s, polkas, oldies, techno… kids, senior citizens, teens were loving everything. Lauren, like last weekend in St. Cloud, tried to entertain herself by going to a movie to pass the time. I don’t blame her, would have been boring sitting there for that whole time watching me play music. She came back around midnight to witness the weirdest ending to a dance ever.
With eight minutes to go at 12:52, I had two songs cued up that would take us right up to 1am—a Justin Timberlake song and then what I told everyone would be the last song of the night, Piano Man. Only the Timberlake song was a bad file and it quit after 1 second and went right into Piano Man. So the song played out and was over by 12:57, and every last person there realized there were three minutes left and wanted one more song. Being the nice guy I am, I asked the crowd to choose the final song of the night. Bad idea! At least twenty people swarmed the table yelling songs. “Ce’st la Vie! Don’t Stop Believin’! Piano Man again! In This Life!” I never would have thought that so many people would have had such a strong opinion as to what song was played last. After a full minute of being screamed at, I played Summer of 69 and planned to shut it down. Just then, the brother of the bride approached the table with a request for two more songs for $20. I agreed, and at 1:11 the dance finally came to an end.
But the dance set several records for me. 1) best dancing crowd ever. 2) biggest crowd ever. 3) Most importantly, the biggest tip ever… $200! If you include the $20 to play two more songs, travel cost, and base pay, it was a very profitable night of almost $400. The drive home went well until I hit Minneapolis. I was so exhausted I really should not have continued driving. I put the windows down, cranked the AC, cranked the radio, and basically held my eyes open to deliver us home safely by 3:19, 14 long hours after we had departed.

I read all 321 pages! I'm smart!
For the first time in about two years, I read a full book! Lauren purchased me the novel “The End of Baseball” in May for our six-month anniversary. It took me a month and a half of reading the book by local author Peter Schilling, Jr., but I did it. It’s the first novel I have read in many, many years. The last book I read was “I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell,” a collection of lude, true stories by some guy. Before that, I read Meat Loaf’s autobiography, and before that, Hakeem Olajuwon’s. Excluding books I was assigned to read in high school and college, this might be the first fictional story I have read on my own since the mid-90s.
The premise of the book is a look at what might have been had Bill Veeck been allowed to buy the Philadelphia Athletics in 1943, which he tried unsuccessfully to do in real life. He hoped to stock the team full of the best Negro Leaguers and integrate baseball. So, this book takes a look at what would have happened had his plan gone through. I would recommend it to baseball fans and non-fans alike!

Captain Safety Planet tonight went down in respectable defeat, 3-1 to the Dream Team. I pitched all six innings, walking none, striking out six, and taking a line drive off my leg but still managed to recover and throw out the batter. From a pitching standpoint, one of my best games ever. Offensively though, the team just couldn’t get anything at all going. Sarah Vick drove in a run in the first with a single, but that’s all the team could muster. I went 0-for-2 with two long fly outs to left. Lauren, playing through an illness, went 1-for-2 and skinned both knees diving back to second base. She’s a gamer, that one!
My day at work was another long day filled with an amazing amount of projets. I get one thing crossed off my list and three more things are assigned. My new marketing cohort Josh explained to me how he has 10+ years of experience in the industry despite being three months younger than me. He started working part-time selling CD/DVD products in middle school, and admittedly did not live a very normal teenage life. An excellent hire for MB, certainly. Aaron once told me during a performance review that I need to be thinking MB 23 hours a day. He said he wakes up in the middle of the night with marketing ideas and jots them down. Uhh, sorry, that’s not for me. I will think about work while I’m in the office, but I have interests that extend beyond the walls of the company!
Tonight, a few young chaps came over to take our organ off our hands. We asked for $80, and got quite a few replies. The only problem, however, is getting it out of our basement. I assisted these three guys and the four of us struggled for fifteen minutes trying to get it up the twisty, rickety stairs. We actually got it halfway up but it got completely stuck. How the previous tenants got it down there, I have no fricking clue. They left without their organ, dejected.
Moments earlier, I joined the roommates for some Mario Kart on Nick’s Wii. Anyone who has seen me play video games knows it’s best to keep their mouths shut cause I suck insanely bad at all video games besides Tetris and I get very, very angry when I lose. Of course, I finished in dead last in about every race, infuriating me, but Sarah thought my anger was the funniest thing ever.
Lauren is still sick, but Wii seems to be taking her mind off things. Get well soon, sweet marshmallow!

Monday evening, our Eden Prairie softball team (the Roaring Pigeons) kept it close for a while, but eventually lost 14-4. Lauren and I got there a couple minutes late and batted at the bottom of the order. I managed to go 2-for-2 with a couple weak groundball singles, and played a pretty solid third base defensively. Lauren was patient at the plate and put the ball in play, but ran into some really bad luck hitting into two double plays. Jim Woolsey supplied most of the team’s offense with a 3-run homer.
Lauren and I brought Roscoe the beagle along to the game to get him out of the house for a while. He didn’t stop barking the entire game. Patrick, from the pitcher’s mound, twice yelled “ROSCOE!!!” at the top of his lungs to get him to quiet down, which worked temporarily. I tried giving Roscoe a treat during the game. He was tied up to the fence by his leash, and when he leapt for my hand to get the treat, the leash restricted him and he did a wildly awkward back flip and landed on his neck.
Tonight we are scheduled to play our Minneapolis league at 6. Sarah this morning told me she would most likely be out for the game with a sore shoulder, and Matt and Gillian won’t be able to make it this week. Sarah’s sister may play in her place. We may be short on girls, but we will be stocked to the brim with males: me, Walsh, Nick, Kyle, Casey, Christian, Jonathon, and presumably Sarah’s sister’s boyfriend will all be there. Post-game plans are to visit the Rail Station Bar.
The Twins were outscored 40-15 in their four-game sweep at the hands of Chicago. Enough said.

The last few games have not been kind for the Twins, as their pitching has suddenly taken a nosedive. Everyone familiar with the Twins has been upset with the pitching struggles of Juan Rincon lately, and rightfully so, but not many others have done their jobs either. Kevin Slowey, who has been the Twins’ most consistent starter lately, gave up a 3-run bomb to Nick Swisher and the Twins trail in the third, 3-1.
My Sunday is going just as I hoped it would. I slept in till 10, watched some Seinfeld, messed around online, cooked up some burgers, ate some cookies, watched a couple DVR’d episodes of Three Sheets, and now am lounging around watching the Twins game. Lauren is sitting beside me in her robe doing some reading and drinking Guinness. Sarah and Walsh just walked in the door and it looks like they’re heading right back out to go play some PS3, which Walsh just now purchased. Nick is upstairs in his room.
No idea yet on what I will do the rest of the day. It’s not very sunny or warm out, so we’ll probably hang out around the house.
Predictions for today’s final score? Remember, I am known for my pessimism.
Me: 13-3 White Sox.
Lauren: 8-3 White Sox.
Walsh: 7-5 White Sox.

Ryan: Lauren, what do you think of Juan Rincon’s pitching for the Twins?
Lauren: Juan Rincon is the master of his own formula for “success”, which is single, walk, wild pitch, double, single, home run.
Ryan: If you were the Twins, what would you do with Juan Rincon right now?
Lauren: DFA. I am going to start a DFA chant next time I go to a Twins game.
Ryan: For those of you who don’t know, DFA means “designated for assignment.” That means his job is in serious trouble. What will the final score of tonight’s game be?
Lauren: You know, in all honesty, it’s in my personal best interest that Rincon gives up a shit ton of runs, therefore his uselessness will be known forever, and ever, and ever, amen. But I don’t want the Twins to lose by a lot of runs. I’ll probably say, White Sox 10, Twins 6.
Ryan: I will say White Sox 14, Twins 7.
Well, back to the game…

So yes, I may have the last blog on the Internet that is completely manually produced. It has its charm, I suppose, but it’s more work than it has to be! Plus with a blog like this, it won’t be as hard to update. I can post little blurbs here or there, or write a full Daily Log. I will try this out and see how it works.
Right now, Lauren is sitting to my right knitting something. We are watching Scrubs and it is a little drizzly outside. Nick and Sarah are sound asleep, and Roscoe might have gone to bed too. I am not looking too forward to work tomorrow, but at least it’s free lunch Friday. No word on what the free meal will be yet, but if it’s not pizza I intend to be at the front of the line. No other plans for the weekend yet other than my DJing on Saturday night in Annandale, which is about 50 miles north up by St. Cloud. I was supposed to have a trainee along with me but I haven’t heard who it will be.
