For those who I didn’t e-mail right away with the news, the last of our wedding fun is over with the release of the photographer’s photo gallery. There are 1,013 photos, enough for me to post a new photo each day until August 12, 2012. Lauren and I spent over 45 minutes taking a first run through the images on Thursday, and I’ve spent another hour or two going through them more times since. Excellent work, CM Photographics!

You are able to order prints through the gallery, but if you’re really nice to me I might send you a copy of our DVD with 4 GB of the originals in hi-res.

In other news, I was happy to see the Vikings beat the Packers yesterday. I have long been a Chargers fan first, Vikings fan second, but it’s difficult to root for a team that I get to see play two or three times a year on TV. Not to say I’m a fair-weather fan one way or the other, but the Chargers have really struggled to a 4-3 record in a weak division while the Vikings have been among the league’s best and most exciting teams. The Chargers are 2 back of the Broncos and still have to play the entire NFC East, while the Vikings schedule is very favorable after their bye week. I’m just saying, I am finding myself more interested in the outcome of the Vikings’ games than Chargers’.

In World Series news, I was upset to see the Yankees take a 3-1 lead over the Phillies last night. Whoever has played the Yankees this post-season looks foolish. The Twins and Angels were both humiliated, and now the Phillies are doing the same. Brad Lidge joins Joe Nathan and Brian Fuentes as closers unable to shut the Yankees down late in games.

I remember when the Yankees won the World Series in 1996 and I considerd it a respectable victory over Atlanta. And then they won it again in 1998, 1999, and 2000, which was maddeningly annoying, but in hindsight respectable as well considering the vast majority of their players were homegrown (Jeter, Posada, Williams, Rivera) or just great stories (Brosius).

But what’s the fun in seeing the team with by far the highest payroll and the best players winning? It’s one thing when they are able to woo the big-name free agents into coming to New York, but seeing a guy like Mark Teixeira pick the Yankees over his hometown Orioles in free agency just makes it worse. The great players want to play there to win, meaning the Yankees don’t even necessarily have to make the best offer to a free agent. Joe Girardi will probably win Manager of the Year for leading the Yanks to 103 wins, but I bet Ron Gardenhire could have won 110 games with that lineup.

Of course the downside to the Yankees losing the World Series is they’d be that much more active on the market this winter, likely feeling they need three or four more superstars in order to compete. They’ll probably land Matt Holliday and trade for Prince Fielder regardless and bat them seventh and eighth in the lineup.

Sorry, just a little bitter today.

Most know my favorite NFL team is the Chargers, but I still consider the Vikings a very close second.  Cheering for Minnesota sports teams in general over the last two decades has been a terrible experience most of the time.  In the time I’ve paid attention (since about 1992) the Twins, Vikings, Timberwolves, and Wild have combined to win zero titles.  Nor have any of them even appeared in a championship game.  I did the math, and only Washington, DC has had a worse streak amongst cities with all four major pro sports.

Not only have our teams appeared in zero championship games, but they may have suffered the most heartbreaking playoff losses.  The Vikings lost to the Falcons in ‘98 after a 15-1 season… sorry Walsh and Nick for bringing that up.  Then they got annihilated by the Giants in the NFC title game in 2001, 41-0.  The following year, the Twins lost to the Angels in the ALCS.  The following year, the Wild lost to the Ducks in the Western Conference Finals.  The following year, the Timberwolves lost to the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.

The Twins lost in the ALDS to the Yankees in 2003 and 2004 in heartbreaking fashion.  Really, really tough losses.  And after a great 2006 season, they were swept by Oakland in the first round.  The Wild were competitive for a few years, then kinda fell apart this season, missing the playoffs, where over half the teams get in.  The Vikings had some lean years before a first-round loss to the Eagles this season.  And the Timberwolves have been a laughing stock the past few years.

The Twins have seen their best players leave year after year—David Ortiz, Johan Santana, Torii Hunter, Chuck Knoblauch, Cristian Guzman, Corey Koskie, and so on.  The Wild lost Rolston and Demitra and will probably lose Gaborik.  The Vikings rid themselves of Randy Moss and Daunte Culpepper, amongst others.  And the Timberwolves traded away Minnesota’s biggest star since Kirby Puckett when they shipped Kevin Garnett to the Celtics.

Yet during that time, none of those teams have really brought in any star players.  Sure, they’ve drafted some great players like Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Adrian Peterson, and Randy Foye, but they’ve never really gone out and acquired anyone of significance.  Joe Crede, Bernard Berrian, Jared Allen, Al Jefferson, and Owen Nolan I suppose might qualify to some as star acquisitions, but no real franchise players other than possibly Jefferson.

The Minnesota teams aren’t going to win very often, and when they do show signs of promise, they crush us with monumental defeats so devastating we think we’ll never be able to watch a game again.  So the very least I can hope for is for one of our four teams to make a big move.  Something completely un-Minnesota-like.  Something that only a New York team would do.

That’s why I am really hoping that the Vikings get Brett Favre.  Don’t you?  I think bringing in one of the greatest all-time players to one of our teams would be big.  I lobbied for the Twins to sign Barry Bonds and now am hoping they’ll make a push for Pedro Martinez.  I hoped the Wolves would surround KG with some talent like when they brought in Cassell and Sprewell in their primes, but they neglected to do that after 2004.

I don’t think the Vikings would be a Super Bowl favorite with Favre, but it would at least be something positive for one of our teams.  It would create some major buzz around here for once.

Nick, Walsh, any thoughts?

Las Vegas/SFO: Day 3 January 5, 2009

First, of all, my computer received a bad virus while connected to the Planet Hollywood wireless network, so if I can actually type this before my computer restarts, consider it very lucky. Hopefully my computer will be able to hold up the rest of the trip so I can continue the updates.

The first two days of this trip were awesome. Then came Sunday, the day of saying goodbye to Las Vegas and attempting to get to San Francisco. I have officially flown on Southwest Airlines for the first and last time.
The day started off well enough. Lauren and I ordered in some room service breakfast and ate while watching the first NFL playoff game of the day, which started at 10am Pacific Time. We packed our things and sent our luggage to the bellhop service since we had a few hours to kill between hotel checkout and flight time. We wandered down to the Venetian to collect Lauren’s winnings from betting on the Chargers, then killed some time in the casino where I won another $50 or so. I figure I came out on top $100 altogether gambling! We stationed ourselves at a sports bar and watched the Vikings game for a while, then it was time to head to the airport.

Like I said earlier, I have never been apart from Lauren for more than two nighst since we first met, so I was sure it would be a sad goodbye at the airport when we had to go our separate ways. Sure enough, it was an emotional goodbye as Lauren headed for Gate C to board her plane back home, while I headed to Gate D to head on to San Francisco. It was about the same feeling I had when I had to go DJ a wedding in a cave the day after our engagement! I had a long time to wait for my 7:00 flight, so I read over half of Moneyball. Just when it looked like it was time to board, the flight was delayed an hour.

Once I finally boarded the plane and we had left the ground, the plane started shaking pretty bad. People were told to sit in their seats, fasten their seat belts, and everyone was given the rundown once again on flotation devices and oxygen masks. The bumpiness was really bad. The stewardesses couldn’t even stand up in the aisles. There were some panicky people on the plane. I tried to remain calm and kept on reading my book. The entire flight was like that until we finally started descension into SFO.

We had finally landed around 10pm, and I was anxiously waiting to grab my suitcase and head for the hotel. Of course, it couldn’t be that simple. I, and everyone else who checked our luggage curbside, discovered our luggage never arrived. All told it was about 25 to 30 people angrily standing in line at the luggage counter.

After two long hours, the luggage came in on the next flight from Vegas and I was rewarded a $75 Southwest travel voucher, as if I’ll even use it. Too tired to wait in line for the hotel shuttle, I just flagged down a cab. A man in a towncar pulled up and asked if I needed a cab, so I hopped in. The grand total on my five-minute ride to the Best Western was $45! I couldn’t believe it. But I was too tired to argue and just forked it over and checked in. It’s now 12:11am here and I’m about to go to sleep.

So, overall… It really was a miserable day once I got to the airport. I really had my suspicions that today would be like this. I had even considered mailing my luggage I’d need for the trade show to myself before I left home just to ensure this wouldn’t happen, but I backed out at the last minute and just checked it like everyone else. I’ll certainly miss Lauren over the next week, but I guess some people have it much worse off, being shipped off to Iraq or jail or something. I’m just at a conference for Macintosh, and in a fun city. So, hopefully things will improve as the week goes on.

I’m sitting here preparing to DJ my final event of the year, the annual Founders Day dance.  I figured I’d be done DJing for the year, but when someone specifically goes out of their way to request me to DJ, I guess I’d better give it another shot.  Besides, the money that I’m making for this night of work will pay for hotel rooms for our upcoming trip, which I’m sure I’ll be writing about more soon.  Lauren and I were originally going to go to San Francisco for a couple days before my trade show in January, but we’ve altered the plans a bit.

In other news, it’s Day 4 of 5 of vacation from the full-time job.  It’s the longest break of consecutive days I’ve had off of work since my first day on January 3, 2006.  Not to say that I’ve just been lounging around the house all this time.  Wednesday I walked over seven miles around Uptown and checked out a couple local gyms, and at night went to the Timberwolves vs. Suns game.

Thursday Lauren and I did lounge around most of the day before heading over to the Poulters’ for Thanksgiving.  By my count, it was the first time in my 27 Thanksgivings that I was not celebrating with the Glanzer family.  Friday I took another long walk during the day, this time to downtown.  Later, Lauren and I attended her friends’ annual day-after-Thanksgiving dinner at 50’s Grill in Brooklyn Center, then returned home to celebrate Jason’s 26th birthday.

And today, Lauren and I took another long walk around Uptown and got lunch at a Thai restaurant.  Then it was time for me to go earn a few bucks by DJing.  There’s still one final glorious day of rest and relaxation tomorrow, and plans are to do some Christmas decorating, watching the Vikings game, and perhaps celebrating the 1-year anniversary of my first date with Lauren.  Hard to believe it’s been a whole year already!

Happy birthday, by the way, to Jordan who turned 24 today, and Grandma Bell who turns 70-something tomorrow!

I don’t have a lot of interest in writing too much right now, but I will say it was a fun weekend with some “firsts.”  Friday was Halloween and we wound up staying in.  Then I met Lauren’s mom for the first time Saturday when we went out for lunch at Famous Dave’s.  And Sunday we went to the Vikings game (Lauren, Sarah, and Jeff’s first ever game).  The Vikings surprised me and beat the Houston Texans, 28-21.  All things considered, I didn’t spend much money and had a good weekend.

Now we’re just resting up before another long week of work begins.  Lauren and I are upstairs watching Bridezillas and realized how many glasses we have lying around the bedroom.  We just counted 14.  We badly need to do dishes.  Remember a week ago Thursday when I stayed home sick and did the dishes?  That was the last time any dishes were done.

Our big household Weight Loss Challenge is off to a shaky start.  I’d be surprised if any of us haven’t gained weight so far.  But we did say Nov. 1 was the official start.  I’m tossing around some ideas, including joining Jeff at his gym, or seeing if Lauren can get me into her company gym for free.  Or maybe I’ll just put that bicycle trainer to use.

By the way, if you don’t have Facebook, here’s the public link to my latest photo gallery!

I intend to write a little more in-depth sometime soon, but I’m somewhat lazy right now!

Stock Market and Vikings Plunge September 16, 2008

Aside from Friday’s big night, my highlight of the weekend was Sunday.  Thanks to Saturdays always being filled with DJing, my favorite days have become days with no plans of any kind, and unless there’s a holiday, that day is Sunday.  Not so much that I like sitting and doing nothing all day, but the fact that I don’t have to be anywhere at any particular time.  I spent almost the whole day on the couch watching the Vikings lose, the Twins lose, the Chargers lose, and several episodes of Dexter on DVD.  We ordered Chinese (which Roscoe wound up eating most of) and at night we stopped over at Tim and Kate’s for a congratulatory beer and called it a night.

I think I’m lucky that I didn’t become as attached to the Vikings as I did the Twins.  The Twins, though they’ve had their share of playoff chokes in the 2000s, at least are competitive and sometimes exceed expectations.  The Vikings on the other hand fail every year.  Any time there’s a season where the team is expected to do well, they fall well short of expectations.  It’s tough to watch them.  I absolutely knew that 15-0 lead Sunday wouldn’t hold up.  If there’s one area in particular they fail at worst, it’s catching the ball.  Since the days of Moss, this team hasn’t had a reliable receiver.  Their receiving corps is like the Twins bullpen this year.  It’s times like these I’m lucky to be a Chargers fan.  Despite San Diego also being 0-2, at least they deserved to win both games.  They lost one on a last-second lucky play by Carolina, and lost Sunday on a botched call by the refs in Denver.  They have a very light schedule coming up and I will be surprised if they don’t get to 3-2 by Week 5.

Monday at work, I received many congratulations from co-workers who had heard about my exciting engagement news.  I’m sure there are a lot who are still unaware, but those who are had some interesting comments.  Said Lay, “I knew it!  I called it at the Christmas party!” which he did.  I remember him distinctly saying that after seeing us singing together during that live piano show.  Said Mark in Shipping, “Run, man, run. Get the hell out while you still can.”  He also made some reference to her being a “black widow” or something… nothing personal, just women in general.

Even I noticed yesterday that there was some sort of horrible day on Wall Street with a plunge of 500 points… or something.  I really don’t know what any of that means, even after two people tried explaining it to me.  Lauren and I stopped by Tim and Kate’s again to drop off CSA vegetables and Tim was watching CNBC with a beer in hand, more interested in the stock market news than the Twins game.  Hmm… until I am directly affected somehow, I don’t think I’ll get it.

In a Pickle September 4, 2008

I’m sure Jordan had good intentions when she and the Krogman family sent me a new game for my birthday. The game, called In a Pickle, is all about size: what can fit in what. There are hundreds of cards with nouns on them. You basically just try to play one of your cards on a stack of other cards. Can a feather fit in a mailbox? Can a gopher fit in a library? The game is completely open to interpretation and you can try to play anything anywhere, but you must be warned that you have to make a good case for it or you’ll be challenged by the other players.

Yes, good times were sure to be had, especially by me, Lauren, and Jason—an inseperable trio. Laughter, witty banter, silly arguments—oh, the fun! Ten minutes into the game, screaming and yelling led to the abrupt cancellation of In a Pickle with Lauren and Jason both declaring “I hate this game!!!!” Believe it or not, I actually was the calm one for once. The heated debate erupted when Jason persuaded me to part with him and vote against a move by Lauren.

In other news, tonight is the kickoff of the NFL season, a nice distraction from heartbreaking, late-inning Twins losses. My attention will never focus completely to football until baseball is all said and done with, but I’ll still be paying close attention to the Chargers game Sunday against Carolina, and of course the Vikings-Packers Monday Night Football game. I won’t go to any great details making NFL predictions like I did baseball, but if the Chargers and Vikings are ever to meet up in the Super Bowl, I think this is the year.

A few notes on TV… I finally got my three amazon.com DVDs in the mail yesterday (cashed in gift card from Mom & Pop). We watched the first episode of Dexter, which is really good although very confusing. You have to pay very close attention. Jason said I was cheating by having read the series synopsis on Wikipedia prior to watching the show, but unlike most, I want to know what happens going in because I’m very easily confused if TV shows or movies don’t make 100% sense right away.

We also watched the first episode of Flight of the Conchords, which I had seen before. It’s a show about a New Zealand folk duo trying to make it big in the US, to little avail, and they sing throughout the show which adds to the hilarity.

Next up, the complete series of Weird Science, which aired on USA in the early 90s.
