Twins cost me sleep; Family visits July 24, 2009

It’s been a very long week, mostly due to our local baseball team’s absurd streak of losing ridiculous games. Whatever happened to losing a game 7-4 in nine innings, or something normal like that?
The Twins this week suffered the following heart-wrenching losses.
- Sunday: Lost to Texas 5-3 in extra innings. Bullpen blew a late lead, and R.A. Dickey allowed a 2-run walk-off home run to Ian Kinsler.
- Monday: Lost to Oakland 14-13. Twins built a 12-2 lead after 3 innings, but Nick Blackburn and the bullpen suffered a monumental letdown, and then Michael Cuddyer was called out at home on a very bad call in the 9th to end the game.
- Wednesday: Lost to Oakland 16-1. Led 1-0 after the top of the first, but Oakland answered with 5 in the first and 7 in the second off Glen Perkins and Kevin Mulvey.
- Thursday: Lost 6-5 to Los Angeles in 10 innings. Led 5-3 going to the ninth, but Joe Nathan proved he’s human by blowing a save, and then Jesse Crain got hammered in the 10th.
Add on the fact that our starting third baseman is likely headed to the DL, and the fact that these games start late because they’re on the West Coast, and it made for a week of abbreviated sleep and lots of agony. Yet somehow, the team remains just 2.5 games out of first behind the Tigers and White Sox. If the team would make some sort of trade deadline deal, maybe they could pull ahead. But they won’t because they never do.
In other news this week, Mom and Jordan visited the Twin Cities for a girls-only shopping trip. From the load I saw packed into the car Thursday, it appeared the trip was a rousing success. Lauren and I did our best to play tour guides. On Tuesday evening we met up with Mom, Jordan, the Poulters, and Rosoks for dinner at a Famous Dave’s that Mom had a $100 gift certificate to after we saw a mouse last time we were there. Afterwards, I took them on a tour of the city and drove around for an hour. On Wednesday after work, we again met up for dinner, this time trying out one of our favorites, Jasmine 26 Vietnamese. I drove downtown again so Jordan could try her hand at some urban photography. And on Thursday, the two stopped by Microboards on their way out of town to say goodbye. Looks like they made it home as Jordan posted a new blog last night.
This weekend will be one of our very few remaining relaxing weekends until after the wedding! After that, I have several weekends of DJing, and we start to have wedding stuff on the weekends like showers and bachelor parties. Not a lot for plans for the weekend, but Lauren insists I must try a free yoga class with her Sunday.

New this morning is the latest from my mother, Marcie Glanzer, who on her RyanGlanzer.com blog wrote about her new dog Buster. Here’s how it started out.
“Now, if I were Julie Andrews I would be singing along, but seeing as how I’m not Julie Andrews, and I can’t sing to save my life, I’ll just tell you about a few of my favorite things…my top three, to be specific.
Anyone who really knows me could easily guess these, but in case you aren’t that familiar with my likes and dislikes, I will reveal them now. (In no particular order)… Books, chocolate and dogs! I LOVE books and love reading/listening to them on audio, but I fear it would bore everyone for me to list my favorite books of all time or my favorite authors. Chocolate kind of speaks for itself, what can you say except that it tastes damned good and I could eat it any time of the day or night. But dogs…now there I could go on and on, which I will!”

Since I have nothing of interest to write about today, head over to ryanglanzer.com where the latest Mom column has been posted! In Mom’s landmark 50th column, she discusses why Carpenter is a great city to live in.
Also I’m sure you notice the new look of the blog, unless you’re just reading my posts via RSS feeds, which is what I would be doing. WordPress has all these free built-in themes you can use, but not really customize much. I might play around with a new banner, much like I did with the Best Picture Review site.
Mom and Dad Visit; Cat Goes Home January 26, 2009

Picture this scene: It’s 8am on a frigid Monday morning, and I’m supposed to be at work, but I’m driving Lauren’s seldomly driven Ford Probe with a flashing Check Engine light down 394 heading for the Golden Valley Super 8 with Jason in the passenger’s seat with a petrified farm cat in his arms, yelling for it to stop scratching. It may make some sense after reading on a bit.
Saturday evening, Mom and Dad arrived to visit for the weekend. They likely never would have even made the trip if I’d have been a little more careful while packing to leave home after Christmas. Of course a farm cat rode home with me in the trunk that day, and has been living at our house for the last month.
This cat was probably thinking that hiding in the trunk was the best decision it had ever made. Before, it was living in the cold garage, fighting for food with other cats and a dog, probably not receiving much attention from anyone. But after it got in that trunk, it lived in the warm indoors, was given delicious canned food that it didn’t even have to fight other animals for, and was adored by roommates and visitors to the house. Alas, it had to return home.
Mom and Dad were also coming up to switch back cars with me. My ‘01 Grand Prix needed some work over Christmas, so I left it at home and took their ‘04 Grand Prix back to Minneapolis. Unfortunately, just as they were about to leave for Minneapolis, my car started making some odd noises and it was left at home. But they decided to come anyway and get the cat and take home Lauren’s ‘96 Probe which she hopes Dad can sell.
So anyway, we went out for Famous Dave’s in Linden Hills Saturday night. The food was of course awesome, but after our meal, we spotted a mouse scurrying around the floor near our table. I told the dude working at the counter, and his response was, “Oh, thanks for the heads-up.” Don’t bother catching it or anything!
Sunday morning, Lauren, Nick, and I went to a new church near the U of M. Lauren and I are looking for a church to host our wedding, and decided we’d best become members at one first. Nick accompanied us, and we all had a merry time. Afterwards we went to Perkins for a very late breakfast.
In the afternoon, I figured Lauren and I had best entertain Ma and Pa, so I scheduled a few rounds of bowling at Tuttle’s in Hopkins. Joining in on the fun were Jason and Nick. We bowled almost three full games. Nick took the first game, Mom took the second, and Dad appeared to be in the lead when we finished the last game. We then left at 7 for dinner with the Poulters at an Italian restaurant in St. Louis Park.
I was out cold when we got home, and slept soundly till morning. Lauren took the Grand Prix to work. Jason had gone home with Nick after bowling and left his car at the bowling alley, so Jason grabbed the cat and we hopped in Lauren’s Probe and drove to meet Mom and Dad at their hotel. We swung by the bowling alley to drop Jason off, then stopped at my office so I could go to work. Dad and the cat took the Probe home with Mom following behind in their car. Kinda confusing, but it all worked out!
Mom Hates Winter January 17, 2009

So, I am lazy and don’t want to go through the arduous process of posting this on ryanglanzer.com. And Mom insisted I get this posted promptly! Here’s the latest column, written by my mother, Marcie Glanzer, as she tells the tales of her icy drives on the mail route and hanging a fountain on the wall.
As written by Mom, 1/17/09…
It’s been a long time since I’ve written anything, so thought I’d take a moment out of this lovely winter season to share what’s been going on in the “heartland of America”,” God’s country”, “the breadbasket of the world”. Actually, I feel more like calling it the “bowels of hell” except hell would never be this cold! This is the time of year when I wonder “what the heck am I doing”? Driving in bad weather has never been my forte and I am getting a real workout this year. The first snow fell in early November and we have never had a really warm spell since then, so the snow has been piling up with every system that comes along. Add in a couple of days of freezing rain and the ever present wind and you have my definition of misery.
One day, I left home at 6:30 AM to find rain gently falling on my windshield. I have never really understood how it can be so cold outside and yet the clouds drop rain rather than snow, but anyway, that’s what was happening…so, of course by the time I got to Willow Lake and got the mail sorted and headed back west 2 hours later, the rain had turned to a very slick, glossy layer of ice on the roads. I crept along at a snail’s pace, managing to stay on the road, and then came to my first stop. I eased to an even slower pace and gently, oh so gently, applied a modicum of pressure to the brakes, but slid right by my stop. I got backed up and carefully got the car parked in this person’s driveway and made my way across the highway towards the mailbox, my arms full of mail. The highway tends to slope and when I reached to center of the road I began to skid towards the ditch. I saved myself from a roll into the snow by grabbing onto the mailbox, then put the mail in and turned to head back to my car. The trouble was, it was so slick that I couldn’t even get a bit of traction. I was stranded! Nobody was nearby to help out and I had no way to get back across the highway. As a last resort, I got down on my hands and knees and used what fingernails I had to dig into the ice and crawled across the asphalt. Now, I wouldn’t recommend this in the big city, but out in the middle of nowhere, with no cars in sight, it worked…I was finally able to stand upright and got back into my car. To make a long story short, the Postal Service didn’t think the ice was reason enough to delay delivery so I was forced to drive the entire route, 165 miles. I survived and since then have driven many days this winter on icy, drifted roads. We had a major blizzard this Monday and Tuesday, with record setting low temps (-47 in nearby Aberdeen, the coldest spot in the entire nation that day) so when the weatherman gave a forecast of dry skies and warm temps, I was thrilled! I was so looking forward to a beautiful, spring-like weekend…what they forgot to mention was the ever present wind which gusted up to 40 MPH all night last night and into today. The roads were worse than ever! But, each day I survive is another day closer to spring. I am trying not to complain as it doesn’t do any good…one thing you will NEVER hear me complain about is the heat. I hope it gets up into the high 90’s all summer, I won’t even care if my AC quits on me. I LOVE HEAT!!
Though it may sound that way, delivering mail isn’t the only thing I’ve done this winter. I have been continuing my decorating frenzy whenever and wherever the opportunity arises. Earlier this fall, I accidentally bought a wall mounted fountain on ebay. I say accidentally because I had found someone selling the exact fountain I had been looking for. It was listed at a price I considered to be too high, so I just continued to look at it and dream. Then one day, I happened to notice that he had added a “make an offer” option to his listing. I nonchalantly threw in a bid that I didn’t think he’d ever accept and forgot all about it. The next day, there, in my ebay summary, was an invoice for this fountain. He had accepted my offer and now I was stuck buying it! Oh well…I consider that to be fate. My next addition was an electric fireplace, also wall mounted. I had a vision in my mind of how this was all going to come together in the basement. I wanted an electric fireplace to keep young children from burning themselves and also because we didn’t have a chimney or propane. I got Dick involved, though I don’t think he

The final product.
understood what I was trying to achieve, but he’s a good sport and did as he was told. I had him build a bump-out on one wall and the fountain and fireplace were mounted on this, then I bought some white glass mosaic tiles (also from ebay) and tiled it from top to bottom…then I put Dick to work once again, this time building me a mantle. Aside from shooting a nail through his finger, it all came together as planned. We still have to build a bar and add a bit of seating along one wall, but it’s all coming together. I even built a headboard all by myself. I asked Dick to show me how to work his saw and cut, upholstered and assembled said headboard. WARNING TO ALL MEN…if you don’t like doing all these home improvement projects, block your wife from watching HGTV! I have tons of ideas and will undoubtedly never be completely “done”.
As I am finishing up writing this, I can look out and see something strange…it’s a big yellow thing up in the sky and it seems to be radiating rays of some sort of light. I think I heard of this phenomenon once, seemingly eons ago…I think someone referred to it as the “sun”…hmmmmmm….It’s been so long since I’ve seen such a thing, I’ve nearly forgotten what it was. Could it be? Maybe there IS hope…maybe Mother Nature has had her fun with me and will decide to be nice for awhile. If not, I won’t despair. I’ll just come up with some more decorating for Dick to help me with in the nice, warm house!

Mom is back with another new column.
“It’s been awhile since I’ve spouted off about advertisements and such, so please bear with me while I get some things off my chest!
“As most of you know, I live in rural South Dakota where entertaining radio shows are in short supply. I drive many miles, six days a week and usually rely on audio books for my entertainment, but occasionally switch on the radio for a change of pace. There is a local station that is just horrible, playing the absolute WORST in country music, but it always comes in nice and clear and has a daily call in show that can be funny, profitable, and irritating all at the same time.”

It’s Sunday, time to relax and watch some football and eat a chicken Lauren is roasting!
Saturday was quite the busy day for me. I was up early at 6:13 to go to work for the annual inventory count. 18 people showed up and we counted $10M + worth of inventory over three hours. This consisted of me and my partner Pete going through sheets of serial numbers and reading off actual product serial numbers to check off the list. We also counted 4,341 non-serialized “starter kits” amongst other things.
I was finishing up around 10:05 and rushed home to pick up Lauren and race up to Plymouth to see another wedding venue, The Reserve. If you recall, I actually DJ’d a dance there this summer. We had a 10:30 appointment, but I didn’t even arrive home to pick up Lauren until 10:38. We were very late for our appointment, but it didn’t seem to be a problem and we were shown the facility. So far, best we’ve seen.
After that, we ate lunch at Quang’s, a popular neighborhood Vietnamese place. Even though it’s just two blocks from us, it was the first time we’ve tried it. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that there are probably a dozen Vietnamese restaurants in a two-block radius? We were very impressed and left satisfied, then crossed the street to the ethnic grocery store where they proudly display dead animals with heads still in tact in the windows. They sell every part of the animal. There were even displays of beef hooves and pork hearts.
We stopped at home for no more than ten minutes, and were back out the door to the Northrup King Building to visit distant relatives Craig Bell and his daughter Meghan, who are both local artists. It was a huge open-house at this studio which is home to several hundred artists. We spent an hour walking around just the third floor. I thought Craig’s work was among the best and most interesting I saw. Craig and Meghan (and family) were glad to see us and sent their regards to the family back home.
Next we went to Target to buy a baster and finish our gift registry. We got a little scanner-happy in the kitchen appliance department. So if anyone wants to follow in the footsteps of Lauren’s Texas uncle and get us an engagement present, the registry is live on target.com! On the way home from Target we swung off at The Bulldog for a couple pints of Belgian lager. We had a merry time chatting and killing another hour before finally heading home.
At night, we invited Tim and Kate over to watch the Timberwolves and Wild games on TV. I fell asleep on the couch around 11 while entertaining guests, dead tired after my long day. Bad day for Minnesota sports… the Wolves lost in Portland, the Wild lost in Vancouver, and the Gophers lost at home to Michigan. I’m not holding out a ton of hope for the Vikings to end that streak today vs. the Packers.
Be on the lookout for a new Mom Column, which I hope to have posted on RyanGlanzer.com tonight, in which she tells us about annoying local radio programs in South Dakota.

A Night with the Saints June 23, 2008

I DJ’d a charitable fundraising dance in St. Paul last night at O’Gara’s for the Minnesota Saints Power Hockey team. I suppose you could call them amateur or semi-pro athletes. The team is made up of people with disabilities, many with muscular dystrophy, and all were in wheelchairs. Liz Burke, who initially got word out that I would be interested in volunteering my services, was true to her word and stayed up on stage with me all night.
Though the dancing was minimal at first, it picked up as the night went on, and by the time the last songs were playing, the dance floor was pretty packed. The highlight of the night was definitely when I was reading off the winners for the raffle. There were 22 prize packages, all very nice, ranging from deluxe night hotel stays to restaurant gift certificates. With only 70 people in attendance, your odds of winning were about 1 in 3. Unless, however, you bought half the tickets in the box, just as one man apparently did. This guy won about seven prizes, and every time I called his name, boos reigned down until he finally started forfeiting his prizes. I thought it was hilarious.
Tonight I am leaving directly from work to head westward on Hwy. 212 towards South Dakota, with Mom and Dad doing the same, heading eastbound. When we meet up, we’ll switch cars so I can have a reliable mode of transportation to get Lauren and I to and from Chicago this week. The old Grand Prix always seems to have some nagging problem. This time it’s the radiator which is leaking profusely. The car runs perfectly fine as long as I pour about three liters of water in every time I go somewhere. But Dad just replaced the radiator not more than three months ago and the warranty will allow him to swap it out with a new one. I assume I’ll be driving the Impala until I can get home again. Right now, I am still debating going home for a day over the 4th of July weekend to see the old Willow Lake gang at the town’s 125th anniversary celebration.
